I have a similar problemwith my big muff, NYC re-issue. Thru poking about I've found that the cleaner the amp setting the better the pedal works.

What I mean is if I've a slight, even very very slight drive on the amp, when you kick in the muff it becomes a muddy mess, and while I guess it doesn't drop in level it does drop in clarity and presence and punch so seems like a big drop in overall... um.. rocikingability!

This is a drag cause I don't like a clean sounding amp, I like some dirt, so I guess if I was pushed I'd use my boss overdrive to keep the 'clean' sound a little gritty, and do some fancy toe tapping to kick this out and kick the muff in... but I 'm pretty lazy and don't play gigs to much so I probably won't...

So I don't know, this is all just from my own point of view... try keep your amp very very very clean, low gain and use the master volume to set a level, and I'll be interested to hear if this helps.
