what are mxl mics copied from?
what are mxl mics copied from?
Its pretty obvious that MXL mics are copies, but being that ive never worked with alot in the way of high end or vintage mics, nor am i familiar with their schematics or contruction...I am curious to know what mics mxl used as a basis for their copies.

One would have to assume it's what all condensor mics are copied from... Nuemann.
If I understand this corectly... MXL, Nady, Marshall, etc. are all Asian mics made in the same factory for all these guys.

I don't really know, and I believe my MXL v57m is anand exception - it sounds outstanding. It was A/B'd with a dozen or so others, it was the cream of the crop.
If I had to compare it, I'd say it comes closest to my experiances with a Shure KSM32.

Re: what are mxl mics copied from?
The Tape Op Royer Mod article mentions that the capsule from the MXL 2001 is a copy of a Neumann U67. I've read elsewhere (probably here: http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256) that the stock circuit in the MXL2001 is basically a Schoeps circuit, though from which model I can't say.
Very few of the common Chinese mics actually seem to me to be outright clones of famous mics in the same manner that Peluso, Soundeluxe, AEA, etc. are. I think the Chinese designers are doing what a lot of engineers do - borrow bits and pieces frrom existing designs, then recombine and adapt them to their needs.

Re: what are mxl mics copied from?
Like I said, mine could be an exception, I've never heard any others - it was a gift. I understand there are, or were, some inconsitancies among the V57M's, you can see my whole story under my review at http://www.harmony-central.com/Recordin ... 7M-01.html but seriously, it sounds great.
I have a friend with a KSM32, and had a roommate with a KSM44. If an application called for either one, I wouldn't hesitate to reach for my MXL first.
For the last six months or so, it's found a pretty permanant place under snare drums, but I occaionally use it on accoustic guitars, and yes, even vocals.

My V57M gets a fair bit of use, too... beats out my TLM103 once in a while on a vocal...

Yeah, I'll give the secret V-57-M handshake too. Excellent as drum overheads.
