Simple question about ribbon mics

Post by Zeppelin4Life » Sat Feb 12, 2005 8:36 am

Simple question: is a ribbon mic classified as a dynamic microphone? some models are 'dyanmic ribbon'. while others are just 'ribbon'.

I has always read and thought they were dynamic, based on the action and pricipal. But then again, royer makes a phantom powered stereo ribbon. Again though, aren't there some phantom powered dynamic mics?
That is something that I have never gotten to the bottom of, phatom powered dynamics... ? More power to the mic for more clarity?

sorry if I made this just a big blur

A ribbon mic is dynamic. The Royer 122 is an active ribbon (the first of its kind). I believe the active circuit in the 122 is after the ribbon, but not charging the capsule like a condenser mic. I believe the Blue Ball phantom powered dynamic mic is a similar principal.

I'm sure one of the more technical guys can go into more detail if needed.

yeah I heard about those phantom powered ribbons not long ago. The +48v doesn't touch the ribbon, it's used for something else in the microphone but I forget exactly what it is. :?:

I guess, technically, you COULD call it a dynamic microphone, as it works on the same principles and what not. It probably got it's own classification because it's so different than your traditional dynamic mic.
