variac for diy stuff...how many amps?

i would like to pick up a used variac from ebay to charge up capacitors, and slowly bring up voltage on diy tube projects for testing. they seem to range from $30-$400 on ebay depending on condition and amperage.... my question is how many amps do i need to do what i want. the variacs seem to be 1,5,10,15, or 20 amp.

for tube stuff you should be ok with 5 amps or so. I am not positive - but I think that although tube circuits use high voltage they draw less current than transistor circuits. 10A would be good for both. I used to have a 20A one and it was huge! Had one huge dial - looked like some mad scientist shit. I traded it to another tech.
