Here's an idea as to how to improve the world....

Post by radiationroom » Sat Feb 12, 2005 8:50 pm

I just got the latest issue of one of Tape Op's competitors, where Mitch Galliagher and Craig Anderton were giving their payola performance on the Quantegy shakeout, commenting about that we'll soon need to ditch our harddrives as well and start recording directly to RAM, "backing it up on DVD". Later on in this issue, they have some article about some guys recording through umpteen different preamps, which frankly doesn't help me since I don't have the cash to buy any of them. {...sometimes I think certain recording magazines are a form of techno-porn to which sexually repressed kiddies masterbate to...}

So here's my idea. We take all our back and current issues of {_FILL_ _IN_ _THE_BLANK_ _PRO-AUDIO_ _MAGAZINE_ (but not Tape-Op) _HERE_}, pile them up in a huge trash heap, make a bond fire out of them, and roast hot-dogs and marshmallow smores. For those over the age of 21, I'll bring two kegs of Yeungling Lager and a keg of Pabst, and for those under 21, a keg of Coca-Cola {...personally, I think America has some pretty retarded drinking age restrictions...} Someone else needs to bring the hot-dogs. We'll get Larry's band to play and have a big-ole Tape-Op blast. The only question is "Which city do we do this in?" :wink: :twisted:

Sounds like a plan. We can have a talk-in on whatever 2-meter repeater is local to the party site so people can get directions as to how to find it. ....provided that they are licensed for ham radio....

But in all seriousness, when I make the "payola" comment, I'm not saying it in a joking manner. I have some serious questions about the editorial commentary in some of Tape-Op's competitors (who will remain nameless on Tape-Op's BBS, but will be named in an article destined for my website). The reason being is that I don't know how much editorial freedom the staff has or how much the advertising departments dictate what the editorial content will be.

For example, let's say that Digi-Crap is marketing their new electronic fart generation plug-in for Yo!-Toolz and the editorial department is jumping all over it as a must have. It just so happens that Digi-Crap bought the back page of the magazine for three months to promote their new product. I understand the necessity of not biting the hand that feeds, but not at the expense of loosing editorial independence.

I'd feel a whole hell of alot more comfortable with and supportive of a recording magazine that was subscription only with zero or next to zero advertising. Then you can bet you'd have complete editorial independence. I'd be willing to pay $40.00 a year for such a magazine.

most audio magazines probably work the same way music magazines do. buy an ad for $1000 and maybe you'll get a positive review along with it.

Don't even get me started on the music magazines/fanzines. The local one covering mid-State Pennsylvania would only give my events the time of day when we booked a half-page or more in their overpriced rag. I even hosted the Misfits once, a major band with a decent size following, got tons of press coverage **EXCEPT** in that one music magazine.

Sometimes I question whether or not people actually read those freebee magazines that sit on the rack at your neighborhood vomit joint. The only time I pick them up is to see which bars not to go to.

Well. If you plan on bringing Yeungling (I just finished one of those lagers myself, thus the iffy typing) you better plan on Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC or Lancaster.

How about a case of New Amsterdam? I'm to the north of you in York County PA, just off of I-83.

Im in to, I have about 3 years worth of mags offering me the latest and greatest in digital technology of digidesign.

I'm down. It's even easier where I live because my town is surrounded by endless amounts of farmland and nothing. So everyone in San Fran and Sac can meet and have some marshmellows and beer. :P

But how do you know that Tape Op isn't corrupted by our ad sales? We're selling out by the minute. I'm sure I can find a BB or link that says so...
