Woman rockers.

Post by dynomike » Mon Feb 14, 2005 2:57 pm

Seeing Melissa Etheridge perform Janice Joplin was the high point of the Grammy's. And also Usher doing backflips to James Brown's band.

Point is, I thought it was really cool to see a great performance from a woman rocker.. despite the fact that I really am not a fan of Etheridge's songwriting. Maybe I've just been brainwashed by the mass media, but I don't know that many good female rock artists.

Hopefully some of you guys do. Let's hear em.

Neko Case is prolly my current fav (other than maybe Bjork). Plus, it gives me an excuse to post this pic of her:

I'm a PJ Harvey fan. Except for perhaps the reminders that come from her clothing preferences, it's easy for me to forget that she is a woman. I guess i just don't think of her as a "woman rocker", but enjoy what she does. but that's just me. I also dig Aimee Mann, but perhaps that opens up the debae over the term "rocker". anyway....they're women.

female artists I enjoy listening to (not limited to rock):

Chrissie Hynde (it doesn't get much more rock and roll than Chrissie)
Bjork
Laurie Anderson
Annie Lennox
Emmylou Harris
Patti Smith
Sam Phillips
Aimee Mann
Joan Jett
Aretha Franklin
Kristin Hersh
Mo Tucker (Velvet Underground)
Sinead O'Connor (controversies aside, I do not want what I haven't got is a great album)
Cyndi Lauper
Gwen Stefani (not neccesarily a great artist but puts on a good show)
Marianne Faithfull
Maria McKee
Yoko Ono (I am not kidding)
Shirley Manson (Garbage)
the Donnas
Liliput
The lead singer from Garmarna is pretty good.

...that oughta keep you busy for awhile. Enjoy.

Oh, and her name was Janis Joplin.

P.S. Thanks, Meriphew.

why is she breaking from there? pffft... women obviously don't know anything about pool....

yeah, i love both polly jean and amie mann (maybe not so rock?) and the older school like debbie harry. illumina (the band joel recorded) has a fucking awesome rocking singer/guitarrist... and all the girls in that band are frighteningly cute. the boys aren't too bad, either....

what about evanescence? :kotzen:

re: Aimee Mann. I guess it depends on how wide or narrow your definition of "rock" is. I think "Could've Been Anyone" is a great pop/rock track along the lines of Matthew Sweet-level stuff.

And oh yeah. Liz Phair.

One of my all time favorite SUBPOP releases DICKLESS sadletramp b/w I'm a man. Jack Endino's mix through a Sanyo is one of my favorite recorded sounds ever. Gotta love the gritty goodness!

..........And the Best female vocals goes to: Kelly Canarie !!

Anyone have any info on the Dickless recordings? Teen Angles is cool, but the grit just ain't the same.

Thanks a lot! Wow, thats some list.. I don't think I can name that many artists, period, in one sitting.. hence the 2 edits, perhaps.. And with correct spelling, to boot.

Add Fiona Apple to the list.

Good call on Neko Case. That's who I was gonna put first...

Lucinda Williams.
Her songs are great.
Her records sound great.
She has an attitude like Keith Richard.
She knows exactly who she is.
She is Lucinda Williams in spades!

Tara Jane O'Neill. Played bass in Rodan and has released a string of great self-engineered solo albums for the past five or so years.

My Favorites:
Carla Bozulich (Scarnella, Geraldine Fibbers, Ethel Meatplow)
Thalia Zedek (Come)
Mary Timony (Helium)
They all have solo stuff out, too, that's awesome.
