Tom Waits, Real Gone

Post by Seventh Wave Studio » Tue Feb 15, 2005 6:00 am

Damn I love that record! How does he get the distortion on everything without sounding cheesy?

It seems as though a lot of the stuff is recorded at a distance, then compressed to shit until it distorts (I have 2 SpectraSonics 610's). But it still has dynamics!

God I am going to go listen to it again.

Anyone know any techniques on his records?

Well in the most recent issue of TapeOp they have a short interview with Jaquire King (sp)? who engineers for Tom Waits on many an occasion. His records are a good example of using the room to colour and create the sound as much as the sound itself.

I saw the Real Gone tour, the only show in US was here in Seattle I think....

Anyway, Mark Ribot was playing through a Fender Deluxe Tweed ONLY, the drums seemed halfway home-made, and the bassist was standup. More amazingly, Tom Waits can make a lot of those vocal sounds without a whole lot of processing - he had two vocal mics, but what he pulls off on the record is pretty natural vocal style for him.

Hope this helps.
