console to computer communication

i'm askin cuz i'm too curious to wait and learn in class...when you've got your console and DAW workin together, what kinda communication is goin on between them that makes the DAW move its faders or pots when you do it on the console? it's not M1D1 is it? what's goin on there 'eh?
