Why can't I monitor with my home stereo gear?

Post by bassface » Fri Aug 15, 2003 1:29 am

I know you're not supposed to, but don't really understand why.

I've got thousands invested in a very good home stereo system, why can't I run a line into the AUX and monitor there?

Thanks for your patience!

you could check mixes on those..i do all the time..to hear what it sounds liek on a stereo..

monitors are better because they are designed to be flat , i.e., represent what is actually being put to tape/hd/etc. hifi speakers are a lot of the time hyped in terms of certain frequencies...depends on the type of speakers you have..some i hear are good for mixing..

im sure others will go further in depth on this..

All this it's got to be proper studio moniters etc. rubbish aside for now. And yes a lot of these manufacturers do give you the sales pitch about how benificial it is to use proper moniter speakers!

At the end of the day if you know how your speakers sound that's more important to you,go ahead and use them, your not breaking any laws,i know people that do this all the time, and it doesn't harm their recordings one jot!

For a home studio a decent domestic hi-fi system should be perfectly adequate for monitoring on. Like Al says, don't fall for the sales pitch.

Ever seen the response graph for an NS-10?

ugh

Ever wonder why most mastering houses use high-end home audio speakers?

Use what works for you. Don't believe the hype.

but you have to admit some speakers just blow for monitors..both ones marketed as studio monitors and ones for hifi stereos..like i said it depends on what the speakers are like..im not really sure what makes a pair good technically or specification wise ..some can be pretty grating on my ears/brain at least thats what i have experienced..im not sure if im being clear in my writing now im pretty medicated from the hospitallast night, bike accident. sorry if being unclear,,.

Actually, with the eyepatch he's Brigade Leader Lethbridge Stewart (in the alt-universe Fascist Britain of "Inferno").

This is what you get when you allow Brits on your borads (sic) :D

You do realise all the hard drinkin', hard livin', fast lovin', easy ridin' Hells Angel types who make up the rest of this board are sitting at their PCs (or Macs) thinking: " What a pair of geeks" (I bowdlerised that slightly).

Yah, Susan Jameson (Leela) was pretty hot. As was Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward.
