Don't know where they get that stuff.
Mine wouild list, in no partucular order(and I'm not going near 100) Charlie Christian, Frank Zappa, Eric Johnson, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Django, and dozens more who can 'really' play. Apologies to other really great players,,these are off the top, and I just got up. Many more,,,their names are in some of these posts.
The question is too broad. What genre? etc. (despite the obligatory, and expected, Clapton, Hendrix, Harrison, Cippolina, Garcia, Santana,,not the greatest technician, to me, but he IS lyrical, I must admit, SRV, brother Jimmy, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons,,others,,,,,Springsteen,,if you've seen him, you know what I mean,,,, dozens of the great blusemen,,and dozens of other great jazzers,,on and on.) Emily Remler. The jazz field is rife with them,,like jazz or not, it takes talent and knowhow to really play over changes,,bebop. What about Vai, Satriani? Peter Green. Steve Morse. Jimmy Robinson of Woodenhead is quite a player. New Orleans band. Everyone raves about Steve Masakowski,,but I think Robinson is far more talented. Alot more original. Oh yeah, Chet, Clarence White, Albert Lee,,on and on. Some Bluegrass flat pickers who'll blow your head off, too. Too hard a question. No easy answers. Many more.

My favorite members of this list would have to be Johnny Ramone and Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo. I find this incredibly ironic that they made the 100 greatest guitar players list because they pride themselves on not being able to play guitar, that's the appeal of the Ramones and Sonic Youth. Also, if they were trying to please everyone, as it seems they were, they should have mentioned at least one jazz player. Charlie Christian? Wes Montgomery? Pat Metheny? Django Rienhardt?

These kind of lists are just indicative of how disposable and short-sighted modern America's "pop" culture really is. Any list that doesn't have the following is just plain wrong:

Charlie Christian - Anyone remember him? RS didn't.
Django Reinhardt - The gypsy jazzer did make 78's, after all.
Andres Segovia - Modern classical guitarist gets no mention.
Michael Hedges - New Age acoustic virtuoso gets no mention
Roy Buchanan - I wasn't a fan of his style but no one played a Tele better.
Jimmy Nolen - Without him, James Brown would be a lot less funky.
Roger Troutman of Zapp - A no-brainer. No one was more original and innovative than Roger.
Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton - It took a lot to take Eddie Hazel's place; he did.
Shuggie Otis - Johnny's son. Turned down the Rolling Stones' invitation to join... he shouldn't have.
Freddie Green, Grant Green, George Benson, Gabor Szabo, Eric Gale - Jazzers missing along with Wes.
Johnny Guitar Watson, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Gatemouth Brown - There's more to blues than Blues Boy, T-Bone, Lightinin' or Buddy.

Rolling Stone's list must have used the same parameters for inclusion as does the Grammys... whoever sells the most records lately is the "greatest".

These kind of "lists" stink.

The fact that Joe Satriani is not on the RS list makes it invalid. 8)

I feel ya, eh91311. Gabor Szabo's one of my absolute faves, and a HUGE influence on Carlos Santana. I also hear ya on Django, Jimmy Nolen, and Roger Troutman (RIP). Shuggie's dope too.

Just saw that someone bagged on John Frusciante. Sure his Chili Peppers stuff is not that great but everyone should at least give a listen to Neandra LaDes and Usually just a T-shirt. It is one of the best things I have ever heard come from a four track, and is great and original guitar playing. I personally hate the Chili Peppers but Frusciante solo is brilliant.

So far, a whole lot of talking, but no one answered my post. I guess the answer is no, right?
