What guitar rocks your recording world?

Post by Meriphew » Thu May 15, 2003 3:51 pm

What's your favorite guitar for recording? My favorite electric is a '62 Fender Tele Custom and my favorite bass is a Fender Jazz bass.

This could easily turn into one of those endless threads. I've got a frankenstrat made up of an ash ProTone Strat body, a '54 reissue MIJ maple neck, a Callaham bridge, and Bill Lawrence 280 and 290 pickups. It's one of the best-playing, fullest-sounding guitars I've ever used, and sounds terrific through my Tech 21 PSA-1 and some little tube amps.

I also really, really, really like the DeArmond Starfire reissue I have--the best Korean guitar I've ever played.

For Acoustic . . . . What guitar rocks your recording world?

Post by honkyjonk » Thu May 15, 2003 7:40 pm

For Acoustic, I'd say my 70's Yamaha laminate. So Sweet. Sounds like
Robert Johnson or Skip James or something. But only if you play like
them, which I wish I could but I don't . Sorry I'm typing in the dark here
How do you get rid of the black?I can't see anything

I have a GnL SC-3, which is now discontinued, but which sounds incredible through my tweeked through my souped fender deluxe.

I love GnL guitars, but I love the SC-3 the best.

g&l asat classic -> fulldrive fulltone -> 1970's silverface twin. i love the sound of this setup live, i'm still working on recording it where i am happy. i'm getting close with my new oktava ribbon mic though..

g&l guitars rule. they put new fenders to shame.

A pal of mine plays a Klein/Matchless setup. Freakin' diabetes, man.
I like a good ol' Tele through a Princeton or Deluxe, too.

Hmmm...
I'm kinda into my setup right now...G&L Asat classic, demeter tremulator, fulltone fulldrive into one of a few different small amps I like. For late night in the apt. stuff, I use the same set up into a sans amp classic set really clean, no mic emulation, into a joe meek vc6q brit channel, compressor set low (or not at all) and the eq portion disengaged. Not a bad direct sound.

Bill Callaham should be ready with my S-Model and T-Model guitars this summer. They are a '54 Strat and a '52 Tele replicas. They should be great. I've been using a '57 Fender Musicmaster. 3/4 scale guitars make crazy harmonics that sound cool.

I'd like something similar to an ES-295 without the pointy horn. It's a 3/4 Gibson semi-acoustic. A boutique manufacturer would be cool.

Gordon Smith - the humbuckers rule, e.g. Snuff, Leatherface, China Drum.

Here's a tip for getting a really cheap guitar that kills for saturated gain sounds: Look for a Marlin (I KNOW, I KNOW!!) 'State of the Arts' series. It's a rip off of the Ibanez Road Star. I bought one for ?45 and got another free (no shit). The pick-ups are fantastic. In fact, I just took one to get renovated 'cos I hadn't used it in 10 years. I asked the bloke if he knew much about the pick-ups 'cos I thought they sounded really good. He just looked at me a bit strange and said 'Whaddya expect from Seymour Duncan Invaders?!?'

Wtf?! What're they? I had no idea - I just knew that through a Marshall 4x12 (4 25 Watt Celestions) and a JCM800 with full pre-amp they shred. SHRED! Like fucking doom - serious KKKERRRUUNCHHH on the 'ol fast down-strokes routine.

The repair bloke told me the Invaders are ?200 of humbucker!! Sheee-it.

Different guitars for different parts

....but what really rocks my world is the
DeLonghi Cafe Sorrento expresso maker..black with the white plastic steamer..i had it modded with a jensen transformer....saving $10 a day on ripoff nyc coffee cafe prices...

Seriously...1980's Fender Japanese tele..basswood body..beat to shit no finish...duncan broadcaster bridge p/u... Ibanez super 70's humbucker in the neck.....I use this to track most of my rhythm guitar parts.
It's an amazing sounding guitar....

then strats/les paul/ cheap 60's japanese guitars for the rest
