mic pre's 100-200 a channel. Looking for 6-8.

Post by Auxillary » Thu Sep 11, 2003 8:32 pm

Read the title. Says it all. Sick of going through the board and I would like to spend less than 1K on 8 channels. Whatever it is itll be better than what I have access to now! I am all about mixing pre's, so a bunch of single or duals of different types would be great. Of course, one with a nice di of sorts would rock too. Im not searching for some all encompassing super pre thats gonna make me a rock star, I am seeking something obviously mediocre. Im not dumb enough to expect much for the price im asking. I was thinking of maybe 1 good mono or dual for 400-500 then buying some cheapos for the rest or no

What are you guys using in this range?

what about four channels of sytek at about $800 on ebay and then one of those sm audio 8 channel deals at $99 through american musical supply. i have the syteks and i like them quite a bit. never used the sm audio thing but for 99 bucks it might be worth checking out.

Get a small Oram console with that famous Trident sound. Console is $1900.

I've heard some bad things about oram stuff-just do a search over at recpit or gearslutz-I've never tried them though. There is a single channel strip(micpre,eq)of neotek series 1 on ebay right now with a buy it now price of $125 I believe. It sounds like a good deal but you'd have to get a power supply and some adapters. It still would probably be under $200.

i would either go with the syteks and a small mackie/soundcraft mixer or just go with one or two channels of a better preamp if you can live with out 8 for now.. your application demands 8 at once? your doing live?complex drum scheme?film?

i'd try 4 clean like the sytek (it's like the neotek) and 2 'not clean' like the seventh circle n72 or OSA stuff. good place to start. try before you buy though...

you should call the guy who owns sytek up and see what he thinks about the series i before buying...or just look up the info on rap...i think there's something up with those series i's...but it could be the way they're placed in the board itself.

have a good weekend - this week just plain sucked .

I still think that until you get into the spendy realm you can do just as well with a Mackie mixer. A 1604 would only run a few hundred bucks. And then you could take yourself out to dinner later!

I ahve given up on that notion of cheap equiment. If I dont start one by one, getting really good stuff, I will never acheive my dream. thanks to JEFF for this revaletion. Just going to start getting good single/dual's in the 500-3000 range one by one until I have a whole arsenal.

Careful with the ORam. There really are some builkd issues there. They sound pretty decent, but I have never gotten a Trident or even Trident like sound out of one. In my opinion there are much better desks out there in the same price range as an Oram.

I personally would get a pair of something really good.

UA 2-610 is really cool. I jst got one a week or two ago, and it is really great.

The EQ os cool on it as well, even just running line level through this box sounds good, actually...

I use a True Systems Precision 8 pre that kicks butt. Channels one and two are wired for optional MS Stereo coding, and channels seven and eight can be used as DI inputs as well. It's the best deal going, I think although a unit costs around 2400. That's 300 a channel though, plus the extras...

The Syteks really are the sh** for the dough. The Oram stuff sounds great, by the way. At least the MWS does.
