Re: Is there a good Stereo compressor for under 1K ?..
For simple, transparent buss compression, there's really nothing close to the FMR RNC, in my opinion. Just finished mixing an acoustic jazz trio through one actually. My only gripe is that it is an unbalanced unit, but hey...
For something with a little more "color," I like the ART PRO VLA a whole lot. It can get a bit "squishy"-sounding sometimes, especially if the inputs are driven hard, but we ARE talking under a thousand dollars, right? For buss compression, hit it lightly with a low ratio and conservative threshold and you're set. It also works great on bass guitars, kick drum, acoustic guitars, some snare drums, and certain vocalists.
You could very feasably buy both these units and still have some money left over if you've got a $1000 budget.

Actually, I was just gonna recommend a 1960 - if you can stretch your budget a coupla hundred bucks - they can be had used for less than $1200 (don't pay any more than that) and if you're really good at grinding, you can score one new for about $1250 - of course you'll have to kick a little down to Uncle Sam on a new one...
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I've got one of these; it's great. I think I blew one of the channels, though.cgarges wrote:For simple, transparent buss compression, there's really nothing close to the FMR RNC, in my opinion. the FMR RNC is unbalanced? i didn't know that... what the heck? why is it so popular? why on earth don't they make it balanced? it can't make it cost THAT much more...cgarges wrote:For simple, transparent buss compression, there's really nothing close to the FMR RNC, in my opinion. Well for what they cost .....FMR could make a balanced version and charge 50 bucks more and it would still be bargain.
Thanks guys, lots of food for thought.

I will let you know shortly.
I had one built custom, with VU's.
They are really well made, beautiful sounding devices.
All of the stuff they make is a really good deal!
I would get a 1960. they work well, and you would have a nice pair of mic pre's while you were at it.
I cant seem to make myself like the RNC.
I tried. It really does nothing for me.
(keep in mind that the CL150 by symetrix is a fave cheapy for me, I have had a few in my career, and never paid more than 75 bucks for one).
That is a compressor!!
(not for the two mix though, sorry about the hijack...)

Aphex Compellor. It looks ugly, sounds transparent, and often sells very cheap used.
