Emo

Post by kylethompson » Thu Sep 18, 2003 1:38 pm

Jackson Michaels' hilarious emo-crush song (see worst song thread) got me to thinking about all the contradictions of the emo scene. Some great, genuine bands (No Kinife, Counterfit, Death Cab) who would all hate the EMO label, and then some really trite crap (let you guys name the worst).

I should be allowed to start a thread like this because in my more impressionable years, I let the guitarst in my band name an album of ours "Emo Robot". Go ahead and laugh, I do. I rationalize it now by saying that we were crushing all the emo kids who were just going through the motions (robot-like) but the reality is that the cover of the album had a stick figure robot that just looked really sad.

Name your:
favorite worst/best emo bands
favorite emo/something crossovers (ex christian rock + emo = creamo)
best crybaby emo band story
etc

I really have an aversion to that word. Emo. I'd be really embarassed if someone ever classified my stuff with that.

I like Death Cab, if that's considered Emo, but all that Dashboard Confessional kind of stuff makes me want to take a dump. I mean, how many songs can you write about crying to your girlfriend over the phone? Every once in a while the music isn't bad, but man, they really got to work on them lyrics. There are more topics to hit than your own feelings.

As for crossovers, what's with all the metal these days being so whiny and emotional? What happened to music about grim reapers and skulls and sacrifices? What happened to all those "Megadeath" style covers?
I am wangtacular.

Crossover
Carpenters + Emo = Bulemo

Story
Hmmm...can't really think of one. But they are all sissies right?

Well, I'd consider Elliot Smith to be emo. So, I guess he's a good one.

And Pedro The Lion is a cross over, I guess. But I like him.

Emo should be called, "pussy whipped". But in an okay way, not like John Mayer. That's "pussy whipped" in the worst way.

C'mon, I know you have some evil in ya. I have been IN 'emo' bands and I find it funny.

Besides, those other forums are so over the top that the flames don't seem to phase me. Thats no fun.

As far as recording goes, Emo has given us good things too. Death Cab has now completely mastered Lo-fi and is well on their way to mastering lush as well.
The new mars volta (which is just plain prog to me, but someone mentioned it) is raw and visceral in a grgeat way. Listen to the floor tom sound.
Don't want to suck up, but the Elliot Smith records do sound very good.
Mineral's "End serenading" (recorded by Trombino) is my touchstone for organic indie rock. Very open sounding.

I would have to agree with Bear's first reply to the thread.

I have to honestly say that in my head "Emo" is not even a genre of music. I once read an article that said the word mainly started getting attached to Sunny Day Real Estate with the release of Diary in 94' (93'?). And where did the word come from? THE MEDIA. I think they put enough spin on what goes on in music and popular culture in general.

If music is emotional should it be put in a "emo" category? I don't think so.

People ask me, well..if you don't call Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real Estate emo then what are they? I answer every single time..rock. They are rock bands putting their own individual spin on rock music. Simple as that.

Elliott Smith plays rock music. It doesnt matter that its with an acoustic guitar. Call it "folk rock" if that makes it easier to understand.

whenever some uses the phrase seriously, i laugh 'cuz i just think of Emo Phillips;

I like Saetia, but I have a seriously tough time taking emo seriously, that's why we did that song.

As you demand creamo...

while Chris Carraba was still reasonably respected.. he was in Further Seems Forever. "The Moon is Down" was with him singing and I thought it was really good, to a point.

Pedro the Lion's "control" is awesome. His more acoustic stuff I wouldn't call emo at all, its good though.

Both are creamo.. haha. Both bands used to be on Tooth+Nail records. I'd have to say "The Brilliant Dance" was a pretty strong song by Dashboard.. its not too whiny.

Carpenters + Emo = Bulemo
Dude, that's CLASSIC! Harsh, but spot on.

Shawn

How come all the bands that are "emo" never want to be called "emo"? Is there anyone out there that actually likes being called "emo"?
