witnessing a recording session
Maybe an interesting thread starter:
If you could have witnessed the recording/mixing/overall production of any album--have been in the studio for the sessions--have seen all the gear, mics and placement, performances, etc...--what would it be?
A few of mine would include Revolver, Loveless, Soft Bulletin...those are fantasies.

Pet Sounds (The Beach Boys)
Any mid 60's Abbey Road session, like The Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, or The Pretty Things' SF Sorrow.
Don't want to start a firefight, but I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the recording of one of the Steely Dan albums. If only for all the free blow.

Kiss - Music from the Elder
We all know that this is one of the greatest albums ever made, right?
The short list of all time most sweetestest albums:
1. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
2. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
3. Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. Kiss - Music from the Elder.
And not in that order.

Would have loved to been there for the sessions of "Who's Next" produced and engineered by Glyn Johns.
Also, for the making of Van Morrison's "Veedon Fleece". Absolute otherworldly beauty on that disc. One can get no closer to the spiritual.

i've always wondered what kind of mics aphex twin uses. HO! just kidding.
loveless, anything joy division, maybe brotzmann's "machine gun," and the microphones' latest album "mt eerie" would have been fun to watch.

Re: witnessing a recording session
pretty much any of Rudy Van Gelder's sessions in the 50's or 60's
The man has very pretty tight-lipped about his techniques, but he built a lot of his own gear and recorded some of the best musicians who ever lived LIVE (no tedious overdub and mixing sessions to sit through).

Id love to sit in with anyone here. Ive never attended another recording session in my life! Nor do I know any other engineers except you folks.
Re: witnessing a recording session
Revolver would have been amazing. As far as Beatles go, I'd have to say the White Album....I just wouldn't have wanted to be the one who had to mix and bounce all those tracks.
Also, I'd have to say Wilco YHF, Pavement's Terror Twilight, or any Miles Davis session. I have others, those are just the first that popped into my head.

I assume you've seen the film, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.bern wrote: Also, I'd have to say Wilco YHF,
I LOVE documentaries on recording, and that is one of my favorites.

Mine would of been "Kind of Blue" by the Miles Davis quintet/quartet.
That would of been an experience

Re: witnessing a recording session
Where to start? So many great records out there.
I would say Van Morrison "Astral Weeks", Tool "Aenima", any of the last couple Radiohead records, Beatles "White Album", U2 "Joshua Tree" or "Actung Baby", basically any Daniel Lanios produced record. Beck "Mutations" or "Sea Change".
Bitches Brew, anything done at 30th Street in NYC in the 60's, anything Motown that was recorded in Detroit. Led Zeppelin 1, 3, or 4. Any Hendrix record. Paul Simon "Graceland". Wilco "Being There".
I could go on and on.

For me, it would probably be the first few days of "Dark Side of The Moon," Jellyfish's "Spilt Milk," Nina Nastasia's "The Blackened Air," (especially since everyone at Electrical seems to think that NOTHING is relevant in regard to the making of that album), t. j. kirk's first album, and either of the Moog Cookbook albums.
