Tony sounds good through a mackie, and a neve...

He reinforces the gear thing for me all the time, just by being a good player.

I plug tony's nice gibson bass into an avalon U5 DI, great.

Same person, same bass into the drawmer 1960: great.

" into the vintech: great.

"straight into a digi 001 front panel pre: great part, unflattering capture....

blah blah blah.

conversely, some spastic kid playing on the same bass into the U5: crap.

...well captured crap....

having frustration or resentment, jealousy, or feelings of superiority towards another person because of what gear they use is just dumb.
I couldn't agree more.
the words "elitist" and "superior" sure show up alot in this thread..
They sure do, I wonder who started it...

Then you understand Dave's point.

Apparently, someone who equates quality recording equipment and practical experience with elitism.

What's with the animosity? I think we could do without that here.

dave's point is not what you said, his point is to alleviate his own guilt, resentment, jealousy, and feelings of superiority over whatever bullshit he's throwing his money at these days, and whatever else who knows what.. what-fucking-ever. read the old modding gear's stupid post with bigtoe, or the "let's make the rnc usable" post where Mark, the creator of the rnc, flatters dave into a tailspin of bullshit when pressed for what makes the rnc not such a great box..

the point for me is that as a musician, i'd never give him my money to record me, mostly because of his relentless elitist posting, which he admits in his original post. if the rest of ya'all are really impressed with that, then that's wonderful. reminds me of the kid with all the toys who don't know what to do with 'em

as far as animosity, sweet fucking jesus, it takes a lot more than this to really rile me up.. i'm just bored.

Cheers!!

Quote - 1/4" 8 tk = toy

That was the 'best' e.g. of gear toffee-nosery I've seen in a while (from last Saturday, actually). Nice.

Indeed! Thanks Heylow!

I've got very middle-of-the-road stuff. OK board, some decent mics. I've been able to turn out some pretty good recordings using it. I know, without a doubt, that those recordings would have sounded better and been easier to create with high-end gear. Oh well... I didn't have it, but I'm still glad I made those records.

Envious of the guys with the best toys? If that means I would like to have those toys too, then hell yeah, I'm envious. If it means that I don't want them to have the toys, then hell no, I want everybody to use the best stuff they have to make the coolest recordings they can.

I don't remember it came from, but I have held on to this quote for a long time: "Start where you are. Use what you have. Create what you want."

We all started somewhere - I doubt many of us were born with a silver Neve in the nursery. To everybody that's trying to do the best with what they've got, I say, More Power To You!

P.S. Heylow - Where can I hear your stuff?

Yo Mark...

Thanks for asking! As it turns out, I JUST got an email today that I would be getting the Mastered Reference from John Golden on Monday! I'm stoked, actually! I had spoken with JJ there a few days ago and he said it sounded like a solid record....always good to hear from a mastering guy, no?

I'm hoping if all goes well, I'll have a few songs up on my website to replace the crappy demos sometime next week or so...if I'm lucky, I'll actually get the damn thing pressed in the near future.

With the crap gear that Elizabeth uses for Solex, especially the first album, I hope my efforts are half as good.

I'm glad I'm not a professional engineer. I don't even understand compression that much. I am amazed at the live version of Beth Gibbons' "Romance" compared to the studio version. Mind fucking!

Word...the Solex stuff is amazing! Particularly when you realize how it was all done. That chick is awesome.
