John Mayer - what the frig?

Post by miamidevice » Sun Oct 05, 2003 8:19 am

Did anyone else watch SNL last night? Mayer (whom I find myself sickly fascinated by) and his hired goons played that "bigger than my body song" and of the three guitar players on stage, not one of them seemed to be playing the main guitar part (the heavily filtered thing that goes through almost the entire song in the background). Does anyone know what the deal is with that guitar part - is it a loop? Is it the by-product of some filtering effect? I feel like I need to clarify this by saying that I don't actually *like* the guy's music - I actually get filled with a kind of giddy rage whenever I hear it - I just feel like figuring out what the heck is going on in this song will be the key to me being able to ignore it. Help!

I read somewhere that he's using the Roger Linn Adrenalinn filter/beat box thingie.....I, too like the sound but find that somehow I haven't much time for the rest of Mr. Mayer's presentation.

How can I pass up a John Mayer thread, even when I can't stay on topic?

That shitless weasle! What a corporate schlock of frat chick music.

Boy, did that feel good.

Him and Jason Mazda or whateverthefuck.

No offense, but I just can't find anything redeeming about this guys music. It's sounds so bland to me.

Yeah, and his album cover looks like the poster boy for abercrombie and fitch. A lot of people said his sophomore effort would be better since he'd probably have more creative control from the success of his first one, but I think that's total bullshit. He just pulled even more crap out of his ass...

someone stop him before he wins the heart of every 14 year old on the planet and puts out yet another crappy album.

I don't listen to much radio and I'd never even heard of the guy until I saw this thread. I went to amazon.com and listened to a couple of clips. Not my cup of tea, but I'm curious why this guy's music and/or image - which seems just as bland and innocuous as the rest of what's foisted on us over the airwaves - generates so much dislike. He's seems easily ignorable.

With so much cool music out there, why waste any energy on this guy?

Whats wrong with you man? A shot in the balls would be FAR more gratifying to be sure! I'd actually LIKE to listen to him sing those songs after that....it would suddenly make more sense

Like I said, it's a sick fascination. I am happy that my question got answered before the thread got derailed. To his credit, the drummer he had on TV was really good.

That drummer was my friend JJ Johnson. He's easily the best drummer in town, if not the southwest. I've recorded him a couple of times, and it's one of those easy as pie gigs where you could put up one mic and be done with it. He didn't play on his record, and I hope to god he doesn't end up having to do that. When he left to play with Mayer, everyone was like shit, I guess we shoulda been payin him more so he doesn't have to degrade himself by taking that gig. Oh well, got kids to feed.

I think I read somewhere once that he's sponsored by Abercrombie and Fitch.

john mayer is the most vh1'ed singer ever; he wrote and recorded those songs just to be on vh1's inside track. as far as i am concerned he goes next to vertical horizon and train. (i am sorry about using vh1 as an adjective)

MAN! you guys are certainly giving him the business. I happened to hear his first album before it actually came out and I kind of liked it. Most of my friends that are really into all this obscure excellent music also took a liking to it. We all went to the show and saw the fans that he brought out and how it was one big sing along....we said "FUCK THIS"!! I HATE sing along bands!

His new album gives new meaning to "adult contemporary".
