Does Neutral Milk Hotel -- In the aeroplane over the sea -- qualify? I'm pretty sure that's a home recording done by Adam (?) from Apples in Stereo?
actually robert schneider from the apples did it, and it rawks. way diifferent than the apples stuff which is more 60's pop hifi to my ears. nonetheless, a great example of the 8 track rtr in action.

my vote also goes for chris whitleys dirt floor - direct to 2trk in a barn in vermont? or upstate ny i think. anyway, awesome record.

i'm really digging the east river pipe record shining hours in a can. tascam 388 in an apartment. drum machine, very few pedal effects. great sounds.

i like the solex stuff too...and gbv.

while wilco's YHF was tracked at their rehearsal space, i'm pretty sure it was mixed at a "real studio with a real console".

jeff robinson would approve of that even...(sorry jeff, had to rib a bit).

i think that jay farrar's new album was partly recorded at home, but man it sounds like ass. really.

ok..

I'll second all East River Pipe albums. Especially Mel. Has anyone heard the new one yet. The TapeOp interview with FM Cornog was great. Made me feel a lot better about my own recording knowledge (or lack there of) and use of a drum machine.

Ben Folds Five - Whatever and ever amen.

This album really kicks ass! Very cool sounds and performances. Hell on one song you can even hear a phone ring in the background. I would love to do a project like this!

If it hasn't been mentioned already, Trout Mask Replica is really everything home recording should be, I think. Roky Eriksson's home recordings are great, too.

The last couple of Magnetic Fields albums are excellent.

YES. Those recordings scream 4 Track Cassette.

Just goes to show that the songs are really all that matters.

Another really good record in the same vein is Elliott Smith's Roman Candle. I believe that was recorded in his basement in Portland on a 4 track. It's incredible.

Right--ROBERT--not Adam. Wasn't sure on that one... Agreed--it's much different than the Apples in Stereo stuff...

I've heard of East River Pipe before--what do they sound like?
