Favorite home recordings?
Favorite home recordings?
So, what are your favorite home/home studio recordings? I think mine's Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You, recorded over two years as they built the studio. I think "temporary" studios, where a house or building is set up just for one record, and field recordings count too.
Re: Favorite home recordings?
Fatal Flying Guiloteens' first release on cassette rawked. Everything after that, which was professionally done, sucked.
Something about cassette recordings that pro studios can never capture. No joke.
Schrasj always impressed me with their bedroom recording skills.
But these are sort of Houston bands from several years back.

Re: Favorite home recordings?
guided by voices - their home-recorded stuff is not technically awesome but oh, the vibe. might as well state the obvious first...
beulah - "when your heartstrings break" - full sound with guitars, great drums, horns, great vocals. their later albums sucked out the feeling! (well, and their later albums' songs weren't half as good as the ones here.)
portastatic - "slow note from a sinking ship" - recorded on an 8-track, i think, and full of acoustic guitar and analog synths. good songs backed up by a "personal"-sounding recording, the kind of mush you get with an 8-track where everything blends together and it sounds like a guitar and a drum machine and a synthesizer is an orchestra.
moldy peaches - a bouncy, fun album that sounds like two people jumping on the couch in the living room and singing songs into a portastudio.
kompressor - just saw this dude mentioned in another thread, it's juicy analog synths, vocoders, and distorted/chattering drum machines, all bound together by a sort of organic looseness... like kraftwerk with a sense of humor, but with none of the ironic snottiness that these "electroclash" folks seem to have. did i mention that i'm biased (because i went to high school with him)?

Re: Favorite home recordings?
led zeppelin 4/ Physical Graffitti was recorded in someone's home, that record is pretty cool.
RHCP "BSSM" was recorded in someone elses home, but I like LZ4 better.
desert sessions were recorded in someone's home, those records are mostly awesome.
Most wellwater conspiracy stuff was recorded at someone elses home, that shit is beyond cool.
Zappa YAWYI period up to the end was recorded at home, cant argue with those.

Re: Favorite home recordings?
Metallica's first Garage Days albums were done in Lars' garage. Brilliant stuff. Not the best in terms of quality, and it's nothing but covers, but it sounds like a bunch of pissed off young dudes playing fast music in a garage.
Let's not forget Exile on Main Street.
I think Sunward's recordings are mostly done at home. Not sure about that so I'll just mention them as a possibility. Trippy space pop. Sounds like Tripping Daisy wih a massive dose of Flaming Lips.

And yeah...that stuff is awesome....wild...funny...ridiculous....rockin'...you name it. I think the whole premise behind that stuff is awesome as well. The song Nenada off 7&8 has the dopest/ugliest drum sound!
I think there is a new one out as well.....9&10...thought the website doesnt seem to reflect it, I think you can get it at Insound.com.

Ditto on the Shins, although that fuckin' snare sound... gah.
Jason Falkner's home demos charm the pants off me. Most of "Necessities" was done on a PortaOne.
Same with Marshall Crenshaw's, some of which have been released as singles. "Someday, Some Way", anyone? A lot of them were on a TEAC 4-track, no mixer. Guitar pedals as preamps.
Richard Buckner's "Impasse" - made on a Yamaha MD8 8-track minidisc.
I'm sure there's a ton I'm forgetting.

Have to second OK Computer
Also, Pedro the Lion's Control - recorded in a bedroom after having laid tracks at a studio and being dissatisfied with them. All overdubs. Sounds really unique though, and an excellent album.

Re: Favorite home recordings?
The early Beck records had great flavor.
Daniel Johnston stuff is very kool.
I really dig the Latin Playboys recordings a lot too, but I guess that's a no-brainer with Tchad Blake at the helm.

Yeah Beck - Mellow Gold - "Put your clothes on mother fucker"
Palace - Viva Last Blues. Sloppy, emphatic, beautiful.
Early Sebadoh - Raw and raucous
Iron and Wine - I can't say enough good things about these songs. The recordings are minimal at best, full of tape hiss and the mixes were muddled, but the vibe is awesome.

Re: Favorite home recordings?
Lots of good ones were already mentoned.
I'll second the shins, Grandaddy, OK Computer (though, that might be a little high class for a home recording), Beck, Dj Shadow (though, I haven't liked anything he's done afterwards as much), Beulah, GBV.
Early Modest Mouse stuff is worth a mention too (though, I may be wrong about that stuff being done at home, but I'd be surprised if it were otherwise).
