Guitar Geek Question - Filter Effects

Post by Marc Alan Goodman » Tue Oct 28, 2003 10:03 pm

I'm looking for suggestions for a good filter/synth effect to use on guitar. I'm hoping to find something between a EH Microsynth and a Sherman Filterbank. I know this isn't so much a recording question as it is a guitar question, but I figure people here have more interesting answers. Thanks.

I love the EH Micro-Synth and wish I could afford the Sherman.

You could also look at the EH Q-tron.

Have you looked at the Mooger Fooger Low Pass Filter? See it here.

The Boss SYB-3 can be a little temperamental, but fun.

The Oberheim VCF, the Maestro...the list goes on!

If you want a pedal, the ROBOTALK is cool. It's essentially a Maestro Filter Sample and Hold. It does envelope filtering and the R2-D2 sample and hold thing.

I also like to process guitars with an Electrix Filter Factorty.

joel was just raving about the frostwave ms20 copy. bet it sounds good. seems like one of the better deals out there. i have a bunch of filters and my fave on guitar is sherman, mainly for the dirt and ability to hit a mono signal w 2 different filters and pan them hard away from each other.

The FILTER PRO unit has a bevy of cool filters in it that work great for a lot of applications. I just got a Robotalk yesterday I'll no doubt try out today.

if you can find a mutronics mutator, that thing is the shit! one good example of it's sound is the crazy filtered guitar stuff at the end of paranoid android on radiohead's ok computer. it's all over that record, actually. most of the wierd filtery guitar stuff is through that. it is a truly amazing box. the moog lpf pedal is great, too, but as it doesn't have an lfo in it, and the envelope controls are nil, it's not as flexible. i use it for bass, but for guitar, it might not be wild enough... a little tame.

cheers,
john

Well, as a little follow up I was looking into some of these and found out that a studio I know some people at is selling off an excess mutator (they had 2 for some reason?). I pick it up monday. I may be in debt, but I'm predicting hours and hours of fun time overusing the thing in the near future. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
