The ECM8000 has a little more self noise than it should, and it can't handle high SPLs, but for about $40, everyone who records should have at least one.
Soundfile (a little more than 1MB):

There are two mics set 6 inches apart in a stairwell about 15 feet from the drums. The mics were hooked up through 50 ft. long cords that are relatively new and of the same wire. They went through the preamps of a Ramsa WR8428 console direct into a MOTU 24i at 24 bit, 44.1. I mixed the files to 16 bit stereo in AudioDesk with the Waves +L1 limiter without limiting, but -.3 output, dithering, ultra.
I left in some of the self-noise at the beginning. The mic preamps I have are pretty clean, so that is the mic's noise.

Got it working - not surprisingly, the problem was mine.
