New Mixer

Post by zxcv » Mon Dec 01, 2003 3:58 pm

Hi there.
I've been reading this forum for a while now, I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I'm looking to buy a new mixer.
here are some things I'm looking for:
I guess I need a digital mixer because I want to be able to make adjustments on the mixer and be able to see my changes on the computer screen.
I need 16 pre-amps.
At least 24 channels.
I want the ability to record to both the computer and tape at the same time.
I'd like to be able to connect my monitors to it.
I'd also like automation and motorized faders.

I know the mackie d8b is an older mixer and probably isn't the best choice.
I've read about pro tools control|24 and it seems to be what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure. anyone use it?
I don't have pro tools yet so I would need to get a core card and interface prior to using the mixer.
It seems most studios use pro control instead, but I'm not seeing the point in that...how would one record a full 8 mic drum kit into pro tools using pro control?

any suggestions?

you might get more help at prosoundweb.com. Thats where I'd ask.

I saw a d8b being used the other day, and they are pretty slick. Seems like full functionality all on the board, with the monitor you speak of. I heard some of the mixes done on it, and was very impressed. I would do some research before you disregard anything.

only 12 preamps, but the new yamaha 01v96 and the studio manager software that's included would do this. i have one and am still getting to know it. from what i've used so far, it's proved to be a very, very versatile board. i haven't use the preamps enough to make a good comment, but i like the dynamics and love the routing options.

Mackie's new dXb is due to be released Spring of next year, but it's going to be $20,000 and I don't know what your budget is.
