a microphone
hi
can anyone suggest a decent mic(for vocals/acoustic instruments) that won't put me in the poorhouse?
i'm talking $50-100

I haven't tried them on vocals but the Tape op DIY mini omni mics are great on accoustic guitars and they cost about $10 to make.

I definitely recommend the LD1 from Pacific Pro Audio. I just heard them in action for the first time last weekend and they absolutely blow away every other cheap large diaphragm condensor I've heard (MXL, Marshall, CAD, Oktava). For $99 I don't think you can go wrong.

used sm57 for $40 should be on your list.

Along the lines of a TapeOp omni, probably less good and more expensive but still does the job for cheap: Radio Shack tie-clip mic. A bit noisy, but does a really good job at getting a clear picture of the sound. Good for room micing of a jam session or something. Good for close micing acoustic instruments. Not the best vocal mic, but it's only like $30, so you can still afford a used sm57 or something too.
