Anybody else addicted to the smell of tape?

Post by MrZero » Sun Dec 07, 2003 3:08 pm

You know the smell I'm talking about? When you either spool a brand new reel or when you are rewinding or fast forwarding a reel. I think I'm hooked on that smell of the tape. Am I sick?

Yes, 456 to be specific. Never cared for the smell of Quantegy 499 or 406. GP9 is probably my favorite of the newer formulations.

Others that never grew on me are BASF911, BASF900, BASF 468, 3M 996, 3M 966 but there was one older formulation of 3M tape that smelled like Crayola Crayons that I quite liked too.

Basically, the smell of new gear gets the mix chubby going too...;-)

Oh, yeah. There's something about it that's instantly identifiable. If I smelled that smell somewhere outside of a studio, I'd probably freak.

Mitch Easter said in his Tape Op interview a few years back that one of the problems with modern recording equipment is that it doesn't generate any interesting smells. Classic.

He's also an incredibly nice and funny guy. It was several years ago in the issue featuring people in the Southeast US. There was a pretty cool interview with Wes LaChot in which he talked about building the new Fidelitorium (which is beautiful, by the way).

I also love the smell of tape.

The grip tape that they used to use on skateboards had a smell that was very similar to tape after a couple of hours running across the heads. I used to think of it as the smell of cherries being baked, without a pie crust.

I record on a computer now and I do really miss the smells. I don't miss all of the maintenance associated with tape though. I never had analog gear that sounded as good as my digital rig, so it is kinda hard to get too nostalgic.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

OK, so I'm not in this alone. To be specific the tape I'm using is 1 inch 456.
It is just great!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking of developing a lo-fi man's fragrance. I dunno. Something like Eau de SA90. Hey - stay in line there!

GP9 freaked me out the first few times I used it because it smells like a shower curtain...
