I have a big bowling locker unit that I bought from a studio that closed down. Mics are stored in one of the lockers, cables in another, headphoes in another...plus it's burnished steel and looks awesome. PLUS I recorded a vocal in there that sounds great as well.

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

In their cases/boxes in the drawers of an old dresser that sits out in the live room. Some of the drawers have deviders for cheapos like the 57's/58's, but stuff like the Coles and the old Sonys and good AKGs generally get put away. I'm a bit of a neatness freak and don't like to see things on stands unless a session is going on...
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

i keep some of my mics in their shockmounts (some of those rubber band mounts are a pain to get in and out) so what works for me is a couple of pellican 1550's with the pick and pluck pulled to meet my requirements. I hope to be up to a third 1550 soon

i attach them to my mic mobile, and spin it around, and watch it go round and round, and pray they don't fall.
...actually...i put them in their cases in my desk drawer too.

We use an old chest of drawers right now. We are in the process of moving them into a cabinet that we keep in the control room so that we can better monitor the humidity.

if i feel the need to keep them up, i'll put a zipper pouch over them so they arent collecting a bunch of dust and insence smoke. but thats usually just the dynamics.

I said it before here : pelican cases
indestructable, water proof, air tight, your gear will be as new as the day you got it..not extremely expensive either..comes with either padded dividers or pick n' pluck foam..Our raft flipped in the central american rainforrest and my gear got submerged banged along the rocks through rapids and landed under a 300 foot waterfall..not a scratch..

I keep mine in one of those red toolbox chests. I bought a few desicant packets and put them in the chest drawers and cabinets. My basement is just as dry as the rest of the house and I use air conditioning in the summer, but I figure it can never hurt to spend $5 on some chemical dehumidification every few months.
You should make sure that what ever you put your mics in is not shedding metal particles, metal shavings can cause havoc over time on magnetic diaphrams. The drawers in my box are on those sliding wheel grooves. If it was metal sliding on metal, I would probably put them back in the plastic tubs I used to use.

Re: where you keep your microphones when not in use
I bought an old 70's plastic suitcase at the Salvation Army for $2. Then, I bought a queen-sized finger-foam mattress pad at target for $8 or whatever. Cut the foam out to fit the suitcase, two layers per side, then cut holes out of the outermost layers in the shape of my mics. GLued all the foam in with contact adhesive.
Snuggly.
I also collect dessicant (silica beads?for anti-humidity), which can be had for free out of any beef jerky package. Throw a pack on top of each mic capsule before I shut the suitcase.

I got a really cool old (30's) wood stand up tool box thingy from my wife's grandparents when they went to the home. It is essentially the same thing as those new tool boxes (the red ones) with the drawers and then the lid on the top that lifts, except this one is wood and smells cool. It has fake-velvet lining in the top compartment thing (the lid lifts up) so I keep the mics in that section.
I am hoping to outgrow it soon.
