"I do not have ProTools, won't use it. I find tape has lots of magic effects sonically and psychologically. Just glad you feel it too. "

Yes, the evil one himself... Lord lucifer created protools to spread gloom throughout the land!

The cute little magic bunnies and elves at the tape factory dont stand a chance!

...Why does someone have to do this every fucking time. So tired.

Yeah - dangerous. Look out people. Incoming preferences!!

Anyway, believe me 1 7/8 IPS is where it's at!! 1/8 inch all the way to the stars, brother. That's why they call me Mr. Fidelity Castro.

As I do not have a tape machine could someone explain how 15ips differs from
30ips. I understand fedelity changes. But when I hear people say how great drums sound etc. It peaks my intrest. What happens just more compression??

What I love about tape is how sticky it is!

I love how if I have something I need to remember, I can write it down and stick it to my face.

I really love the 3/8th inch scotch tape for most things. Though right now I'm getting ready to move and have sellected a high grade 1 1/2 inch opaque packing tape that I got from Uhaul. Using it on my vintage 3M tape gun that I've had modified to hold a 5 inch spool. I ususaly go about 10 to 12 ips, slower tends to produce wrinkles, and if I go much faster my accuracy suffers. But it's bad ass and totaly analog!

Have any of you tried double stick? Shit! You can get some sick sick effects with that shit man! The only limit is your imagination dude!

Tape lovers, a word of caution.

Steer clear of tape worms.

No, I believe what Joel meant was
"step out of praising one side of the digital/analog world to bash the other." And it always seems to come from the analog side--you don't see too many digital folk bashing analog, it seems. The same thing happens when guys brag about how cool their PC is--they can't do it without stopping for a second to bash macs. It happens a lot around here and it's really old. If you like your tape machine, great. If you like 15 ips better than 30, fine. If you think that inherent noise and hiss is acceptable, or that the distortion resulting from recording to analog tape is better than the distortion resulting from recording to digital, great. If you'd rather rely on the marginally-predictable frequency curve of a piece of tape to make your drums sound good than mike 'em right in the first place, great. Just don't feel you always have to reach over and slap the ProTools guys around while you're talking about it, because then all you'll get is another thread full of ridiculous bullshit like all the stuff I just typed. And there's no reason for it, unless maybe you're insecure about your decision and need to justify it to yourself in a public forum. This board needs fewer religious skirmishes between the New Agers and the Fundamentalists.

Have a nice day.

Way to go ahead perpetuate what your complaining about, and not practice what you preach.

I would have to agree.....it's not just stating preference, either...it's the total disdain for anything other than one's preference, as if one's preference is better than someone else's.

Just f#@king record stuff already and be thankful to live in a world where it's even possible regardless of medium.

That said, 15IPS can sound fat but it's noisier and will get noisier as you make the millionth pass or start compressing that noise floor to the top or tweaking the high end of that EQ. Maybe that's what everyone is digging......I like a bit of noise myself. I haven't used it a whole lot but I don't think I'd track with it.....mixdown.....yeah maybe at mixdown! A nice thick master might work.

Another thought...why is it that it's always the "analog or die" guys who's recordings I never see available for listening around here?

hey CabreeToe, 15 ips has a little more noise than 30 ips but there is a low end bump that occurs that many find very nice for tracking bass and drums...

AWWW! Look at those bags on the dog's feet! Poor dog......that sucks for him. I'll bet tape speed is FAR less important to that dog in that picture.
