I was never expecting it to, regardless of how many engineers say that about the 1176.

I was simply saying I was sort of expecting a instantaneous "WOW!!!" from it initially, as it was when I first got my LA-3A.

But as I said, haven't used it vox yet...

Yes, I know about slamming these things... I slam my LA-3A on a daily basis!

I was being complimentary actually. I am glad you like the 1176. It is a great box.

I was glad someone posted praising a piece of gear.

With respect,

The old urei stuff kind of does sound good automatically, we had a la3a
that was not compressing for a while but we still ran stuff through it
for the transformer sound, some article in tape op said "we ran urei
boxes on every channel without processing just to make some
digital recorder listenable", or somthing. I want an old 1176 so bad I'm
thinking of robbing a bank, or a gas station. can anyone recomend
either estableshment?

Since everybody is praising the 1176, I thought I'd just take the opportunity to say that I'm selling mines in the Buy/Sell area. Although I must say that reading everybody's posts is making me start to cry at the thought of parting with it (I need the cash). I agree with Joel in that the 1176 sounds best when pushed to the limit. I personally didn't really know the "correct" way to use compression when I first bought it but when I started fucking with the settings and putting them at their extremes, I got some really cool sounds. I personally like them for breathy, female vocals and any drum sounds for that matter.
