Spray Paint, Stencil, CDR, limited tour edition, DIY
Yo homeslices,
i've read it somewhere, here perhaps? about spray painting the tops of CDR's. I just plan on using a simple stencil and just "dusting" the top... any suggestion? problems? worky worky?

I have done this so many times, it is not even funny. It works great. Once you get the hang of it, it can look really good. I mean really good. Make sure you son't get any paint in the bottom side (duh). Coat the tops evenly, so the cd can spin properly. You can paint over that clear space in the middle of the disc, or you can cover it. The top of a 35mm film canister works great for covering it.
Problems are the same as anything you might spray paint: runs, drips, general ugliness. Practice, practice, practice. Use flat paint; the glossy stuff stays sticky, and you'll have fun buying new cd players for your friends.
By the way, I like to think I invented this.
Good luck!

Generally speaking, stick with the more expensive stuff. The store brands are for shit.

Just to add my bit, Drum heads make the best stencils. way better to deal with than cardstock.

yeah, in design school we always used a stiff acetate. you might try and make a die, or go to someone who can. die-cut stencils are the way to go. you can get some mad detail that way.
i'm down for an evening of pressing CD's if you throw in some brew-ha-haz.

You won't need that other stuff, the paint fumes are enough to make everything smooooth. Paint fumes, and the joy of a job well done.
I forgot to mention that one time I got my hands on some army surplus flat black. It was great! I don't mean for huffing (I don't really remember.)

Krylon Fusion
So here's a related question: would Krylon Fusion (the kind that bonds with plastic) be a bad idea with CD-R?
I'm thinking of doing some empirical testing, but wondered if anybody else went into that minefield before.

We used our old T-shirt silk screen and glittery gold ink - looked very pro, took forever, though.

just to throw another idea out there, i've been using a rubber stamper onto injet printable cdr's. works pretty good, each stamp come out a little different, but good looking overall. the printable cd-r surface takes the ink well.

You can also use a stamp and screen ink. You don't have to use printable cdrs for that.

Sometimes spraypaint will mess up your cd-r..the particles are so small they get around the ends and wind up on the wrong side of the disk..a lot of the time the disks will play ok..sometimes not..i have noticed other problems too..quality issues..skiping..etc..if your going to spray paint..RUSTO is the only brand..Krylon always sucked and now sucks more than ever..European paint is very very very good too but very $$$.. Vintage paint can be good but a lot of it has lead in it..
Press the cd-r as tightly as possible to mask the write surface..
stamping with screen ink is hot hot hot..and simple..
