battling oktava's darkness.

Post by the velour fog » Fri Dec 26, 2003 8:44 am

so i currently have three mics. sm57, oktava mk-012, and oktava 219. the sm57 and 219 are both fairly dark mics. the oktava mk-012 is pretty crisp. i plan on making the tape op omnis soon. and i was wondering another mic to look into that kind of balances oktava's dark sound and the other mics' sometimes harsh realities? I don't want something super bright...i'd still like something that's pretty mellow...but just not quite as darkly colored. any suggestions on mics to look into? (can spend up to $250)

SM57 dark? Are you sure it's in good shape? I wouldn't characterize SM57 as dark.

Anyway, here are a few ideas for brighter-sounding mics:

Rode NT1000
Studio Projects C1
Sennheiser MD421-II (not the older 421(N)) or MD431
Beyerdynamic M500
and, at the very extreme of brightness, the EV N/D767

I'll second the C1. It's very bright, and very useful.

You might want to look into some Audio Technica mics (like a 4033). Studio Projects, some MXLs and Rodes might fit the bill too.
I am wangtacular.

I really enjoy my AT 4033--I got mine on eBay for $200. I don't have a lot of nice mics, but this one's my favorite.

yeah the at mics are good. i'm forever recommending the 4040. a 421 or 441 would probably be a better bet though...

I really like the CAD M-179 in that price range. It is a very versatile mic that is not at all harsh. It has a variable pickup pattern (omni-cardioid-figure 8), and it responds well to differences in placement.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

57's have this wierd impedence thing. if you don't match it up to the right pre, they sound dark...well, at least to my ears. But I just kinda work with that.

I think Gunshy wants to pop it with some presence, if I'm hearin him right.
Tube condensers are great at that, but maybe something just peaky in the upper mids. How about the Groove Tubes mics? I've heard some great stuff outta one of their FET mics.

Wow, I didn't know the Oktava 219 was on the darker side of things. That makes me want to get one. I'm always having trouble with mics that are too bright. 219 dark? Anyone agree here?

I would characterize the 012 as "dark" but I haven't thought of the 219 as such. But I haven't heard a lot of different LDCs so take it with a grain of salt.

219's vary a bit, but some have called them dark. mine is, i guess you could say, a little "soft" up top. its silky in a way, but not a very sensitive mic as condensers go. I really really like my 219s tho.

The Pacific Pro Audio LD-1 is a good choice for $100. It has a nice presence without being obnoxious.

i like my 219's
one is a couple dB's louder than the other, and they were made two years apart. i modded mine a bit:

removed the mechanical HF booster
cut the cage off the front
put some speaker putty on the bottom front of the capsule chamber (?)

the last two mods were to cut down on the "cage" ring/resonance
