Records or stuff you did in 2003(an appraisal)

Post by joel hamilton » Wed Dec 31, 2003 6:04 pm

What stuff are you proud of for 2003?

I wound up recording and or mixing:

David Grubbs

Frank Black

The Book Of Knots

Players Club

Alex Blake (Sun Ra Arkestra people)

Beetroot

Katie Elevitch

There are a zillion more, but those come to mind right now as 2003 slips into oblivion. What did you all get to do that you think of fondly?

Here's to a new year of great sounds.

A couple of local bands, and a lot of my own stuff. I finally found out how to get decent guitar sounds, so I'm happy with what I've done this year.

I worked on one record for most of this year, and I'm really proud of it. Also helped some friends record a nice record that's doing well.
I am wangtacular.

Yeah - that's like me and Pete. Except me Gran's dead, so we couldn't do that bit. Not unless we did some oujia board thing. Actually someone locally did once approach me to record a seance. I still haven't done that, although I know the person is still doing all that spiritualist crap. Gotta love it though - multi-tracking the deceased. Close mic-ing the choir invisible.

Meanwhile I've got really into this 424 I bought - a purchase necessitated by the fact that I was being far too prolific to afford enough 1/4" for the ol' Fuxtrax R8. 424s are the way forward, I swear it.

*Cue the hot bile of intense disdain* (wake up, smell the scoffing etc.)

I've recorded rucks of crap this year and most of it I'm really into. Which is an absolute miracle cos normally I hate my stuff more than anyone. Yeah - after 20 years doing this band and recordin bollocks I'm absolutely lovin it. Amazing. God, if you're up there, you're a weird fucking bastard but sort of not all that bad at the end of the friggin day. Tosser! :)

On another note, I love Dave fuckin Grubbs too. It's funny cos the other day I was rifling through shelf 39b and noticed that, by some bizarre quirk of chance, my copy of Skag Heaven had ended up next to Red Crayola's Soldier Talk. By the dark laws of motion that rule the glacially slow circulation and motion governing the eternal disorder of my some 4000 LPs, Mayo and DG had thus still managed to meet up. Smart, eh?

Oh - I should say here that my intense love for the latter is based solely on Skag Heaven (Bastro I struggled with, and Gastro Del Sol - well, I just literally dunno). I wanna see him do something with Pete Searcey in '04. It's gotta happen though, right??

I got an internship which was pretty cool and got to help out and record a couple of rap groups. A good step i think to a career in recording though i don't really like rap.

i played freaky music in front of strangers in a strange city

i invited strange people into my home to record for next to nothing

i recorded:

a 40+ track R&B song from a boy band artist
a jesus jam album w/ 30+ min long songs
some bluegrass
a spoken word bat mitzvah cd
some avant garde experiments
my 1st rock album - high school kids tracking straight to tape
lots of singer-songwriter guitarists

much much more

this year was our "lab/studio" opened.I basically stayed away from the 'hollywood;gigs and basically got kinda turned on by listening to new music. a lot is regurgitated with an attitude, and mostly good looking people.. Our studio did a sh*t load of cd duplication and I was involved in producing/engineering a bunch of those records..my favorites are:
(3) Humboldt Time Live Jazz from the Pub
Stacy Falcis- Herstory 101
Reggae on the River 20th- Mastering
Ponche- Cuban Timba House Band
a couple of High School Seniors Projects
Aunt Clara Remembers- spoken word granny
Folk Chick Diane Patterson
Darryl Cherney & The Chernobles
Paris Zax - Hip Hop
North Coast Underground
and more than 120 gigs of bits !

Well, here's where the pros and amateurs are really separated, no doubt. I'm thrilled to have finished a single CD in 2003: lo-boy: Ballet of Trucks (my own band, naturally). Also recorded a bunch of demos and stuff for friends (mostly acoustic guitar and singer stuff). Been working on the second lo-boy CD for the last couple months.

Now, if you'd asked what I'd written, well that would be a longer list. . . .

Best,
--JES

well........i did a record with JC Hopkins that was pretty cool.we had Garth Hudson and Levon Helm play on it.ended up doing a whole bunch of sessions with Garth after that.he is fucking amazing, but also a bit crazy....never a dull moment.actually,i'm gonna be working with him again on sunday.

did some recording for Martha Wainwright.can't wait for that to be finished.

did a bunch of stuff with Mercury Rev,things they produced,Heather Nova,Nikolia Dunger,Hopewell and some stuff on their record.

worked on the new Norah Jones record.it's really good.much better than the last one.

and a whole heap of other stuff too.

-did the guerilla piano recording at Seattle Art Museum and played some guitar, bass, drums, keys on Daniel G. Harmann's record. It's coming out 2/17 on Post436 Records.

- played drums on the Fey Ray album and sang backing vocals. It comes out on 2/24 on Blue Disguise Records.

- recorded 7 songs with my friend Marc live to 2 track in my apartment. It turned out great. I really hope he does something with it.

- recorded a few live shows for friends just for fun.

I'm currently in the middle of "remastering" some soundtrack music some friends and I did for a play 5 years ago.

I really didn't work on my own stuff that much in 2003, but that will change this year. I also want to get much more involved in recording other people. I had a blast recording Marc, and I want to do a lot more of that kind of thing - Just have people over to cut stuff live, and send them home with a CD. My girlfriend and I will probably look for a rental house in the spring.

But I was very much bothered with my work!
