Precisely the kind of hipper-than-thou record-store-clerkist ironic-tee-shirt-sloganesque comment I was referring to in my earlier post. And while we're at it, it is pointless to own Radiohead records in the wake of Johannes Brahms. I mean: ripoff city!!!

I got to see part of Malkmus' set this summer opening for Radiohead and the guy pulls off all his fucked up guitar and vocal parts live as well. Truly talented guy. I've heard he can be a bit of an ass in person, but I've heard that about half of the musicians I like. His rambling, falling apart songwriting style is so addictive, he sucks you in thinking "this guy is losing it , he'll never pull this off, the song is falling apart" and then WHAM! he turns some vocal phrase or throws in a perfectly arranged part and just nails it. It's like an adreneline rush when he actually lands some of that stuff.

I think his guitar chops tend to go unrecognized (except for on this board) because so much press is devoted to his lyric and vocal style. Awesome guitar player. One of my favorites.

Does anyone here not care for him? Me.
I've even tried. Listened to Pavement via many suggestions
throughout tapeop.

Saw him open for Radiohead and totally didn't get it.
He almost seemed out of place, and the show just thrown together.
Compared to Radiohead's performance it seemed like night and day.

So tell me the absolute greatest thing I should listen to from
Steven Malkmus and maybe it will open a new world for me.
Come on, tell me.

The first half of the "Stephen Malkmus" album, "Wowwee Zowee" and "Crooked rain" by Pavement. I do like "Pig Lib", but that first solo album just kicked my ass. It was one of those moments where you think "Wow! Somebody else hears the music I hear in my head!"

crooked rain is an awesome sounding recording. That mix has a really 3-D sorta feel to it that not a lot of records have. I wish I could get into pavement.

Sorry, I look at this forum at work also. I just keep my browser on a smaller size so I can scroll past any possible offensive stuff.

I tried my friends. I tried. I just plain don't like this guy's music.
I checked out what was suggested. Some of it I found semi-
unobjectionable. In other words, not bad but nothing I would
buy an album for. Some of it I found downright annoying.

Go figure. Thanks for the suggestions, but still no good.

A record sounding cool and a band being cool are not two things that necessarily have to go hand in hand.

Ever listen to Johnny Mathis? There are some ill sounding johnny mathis records. alas, Im not the biggest fan...

Well, for what it's worth, it seems the things you don't like about Malkmus/Pavement are exactly what he/they were going for, and what makes the music unique. It sounds like you didn't like the whole nonchalant-ness when SM opened for Radiohead, and that's kind of his thing. So in that sense, he's at least succeeded in communicating his vision
