UREI 7110.. anyone else love this thing as much as i do?

Post by Slider » Sun Jan 18, 2004 1:23 pm

what a great cheap compressor. I'm always shocked at how great this compressor sounds on drums, vocals, acoustic guitar ect. anyone ever tried running a whole mix through a pair? It's aggresive but still has an expensive sound.

What is the going rate on this thing? If I recall, was the transformer an option on them? If so, do you find that it makes a big difference in the sound?

Man, I love mine to death. I got a pair of them for about $150 about two years ago from a shop that didn't know what they had. I put the output transformer in them, and they sound great. I think without the xfmr, you don't get balanced output, but with it, you get the added tone. It's a regular UREI output transformer that you get NOS from JBL, and it's easy to install. I got the comps because they were rumoured to be sort of like an 1176 or a distressor, which they really aren't. As far as the versatility, I'd say they are up there with those units. The more I use them, the more I appreciate how cool they are. The real magic with these units is the knob that is variable between a peak and RMS detector. With it set on peak, it'll get aggessive as all hell with tons of distortion, and even get pretty close to the distessor nuke thing as a limiter. You can slowly introduce more average sensing into the compressor to make it a little smoother. I usually stay somewhere in between. I really like the auto function on this compressor, as you can get away with a ton of compression on a vocal or guitar, and never really hear it. I've also used it as a sub compressor on a mix, and it really brought it to life. I haven't had much luck running the whole mix through the pair, as it seems like the attack/release is weird for that, and it doesn't have the right color for a mix. These are really great utility compressors, but I'm not sure if they're quite worth what the current ebay prices are commanding. If you don't have any good compressors, this would be a good one to pick up.

Has anyone had a chance to compare these to the Urie LA-22, LA-12, or LA-10? Those units were originally designed to be part of the 7000 series and I was wondering if there are similarities.

I really dig mine as well. They are going up in $ on eBay though.
I use it on Kick and DI bass all the time and really wish I had 1 or 2 more.

Are you sure it isn't part # "16-14960 - XFORMER FOR 7110 $64.85"?

could be. i've never ordered it, just read that was the part from another source. best thing one can do is call!! :D

EDIT: I just looked around online, and this is what i see for UREI #16-14550: "XFMR OUT VAR MODELS, $35.19"... so i guess it's the same thing but works for various models? call JBL and ask which will work best, it sounds like this part will work fine, but perhaps it's best to get the one designed for the 7110?

i found it on the PDF document on the JBL site. now i just need to find out how to order it. someone said it's easy to install. is that true? i mean is it really easy, cause i'm terrible at soldering. but i would love a pair of these with transformers added.

there's also a pdf document out there that is a copy of the manual and outlines how to do it... sorta. i haven't tried it, of course, but it seemed kinda outta my league, as i'm not all that when it comes to electronics. i can solder a cable, that's about it.

i've had the hardest luck personally finding even a single one with the transformer already added, and if it does have it, it'd probably command more money than it's worth.

Trust me, if you can solder a cable, you can install this transformer. Cables are a BITCH! It is designed for pcb work, and just pops right in, and then you solder the legs to the pad. You may have to cut a resistor out. Even the unit is pretty easy to take apart. The transformer I got is I believe the one designed for the 7110, and probably beefier than the utility one. $$$ gets good transformers, and you don't want to skimp in that department. $65 sounds about right for the ones that I got. Does ya'lls have balanced output without the transformer? I don't remember. Totally worth it for the tone and the lack of wierdness with good balanced output. I'll always take a transformer if I have the option.
