MAN!!!!! Great thread. Glyn Johns. Andy's all over the place, but his brother's a bit more reclusive. (No offense--I really enjoyed the Andy Johns interview.)

Brian Paulson. Same deal. He never seems to talk to anyone.

How 'bout a round table discussion with some of the frequent writers? Larry, Andy, Roman, Hillary?

Erik Wofford and Brad Avenson.

How's that?

I'd be willing to interview Brian Paulson, if I have the time. I worked with him over the summer at Sound of Music in Richmond and he was one of the coolest people I've met in this business. I say that I'd be willing to interview him, but when am I going to get a break? That's probably why he's hard to interview, because he's ALWAYS working!

I'd like to see an interview with Larry Crane.

In Mix.

Roger, again you're proving to be my hero. Next to Dave, of course. Joel's off the list because I still don't have the CD he promised me two months ago. If you interview Brian, get all techy on him.

I think Larry was in Mix recently, wasn't he? Some sort of discussion with a bunch of studio owners, but he was one of the lucky few. H...A........H... A.

That's the thing with Brian. He doesn't seem to be terribly techy. I found that I work in much the same way that he does. You hear a sound. Does it sound right? No? Change it. Sound right yet? Yes? Good. leave it alone. He's a very easy going person to work with (as was David Lowery on the same session, granted we were working with an easy-going band, so it was one of the most fun experiences I've had in the studio).

I just think it'd be funny to get all techy with him.

Truth is, there's gotta be something to it, you know. I mean, his records sound like a band playing in a room. Not everybody's records sound that way. In staying out of the way, he's got to have some things he does to insure that the sound of the band comes across. Even if it's purely conceptual. Guys like that always say, "Oh, anybody could make this record because the band sounds like that." If that were really the case, more records would sound like that.

Listen to me. Records...

wow! maritn recorded the last two lp's that Pineal Ventana (a band i played in)
recorded. i joined the band right after the last record was recorded and we never got back up there to record with him again. i've met martin though and he's an incredibly cool guy!
come on...swans, cop shoot cop, sonic youth, john zorn, fred frith, bill laswell,
fushitshusha/keiji haino, helmet, foetus, elliott sharp, derek bailey, boredoms, cibo matto, peter brotzmann,prelapse.....and of course he has a Gold record for his work on herbie hancock's famous "futureshock" lp!

actually my old band mate and good friend now also runs a studio called Seizures Palace out of the same studio space as martin's BC studios. that building is incredible! it's an old armory with 20ft+ ceilings and concrete walls in the drum/live room and seperate 15ft room divided off.

glad to see martin's name finally mentioned her by someone other than me! and yes, i would definitely like to see a Bisi interview in tape op...mayve i should do it!

thanks,
todd

This may be really obvious but what about Nigel Godrich? I was just listening to Beck's "Sea Change" today. That record is incredible.

Or maybe Steve Lillywhite. He's done a lot of cool records.

Shawn

Oh, and Brian Paulson, that would rock.

Mike Mogis. He does most of the Saddle Creek stuff, and I'll be damned if it's not amazing.

Dave Meegan, Stewart Every and Marillion. They've done the last few records at the Racket Club, their own "home studio," and they're running their own record label and promotions machine. A whole big DIY operation. Could make for a cool article.
