NINE INCH NAILS...like to learn more about there gear etc
hi
i was wondering if tapeop ever did an interview on trent reznor. i'd like to find more information on what kind of gear he is using and what kind of mics and mic pres he is using. alot of people either like him or hate him, but i really think that regardless if you like his style is recordings sound awesome. please let me know if you have any info. thanks

I have no idea how good this is, but take a look:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 2?v=glance
Keyboard did a story on NIN in February 2000, but the focus was mainly (surprise!) on keyboards. Though they do mention an 80-input SSL, 2 Studer 24-tracks and a Pro Tools set-up, there's no mention of mics or pres.
Edit: Post #666 and I'm talking about devil music!

You could have bought the gear he was using. "They" were selling all the outboard gear from his studio on ebay a couple years back.
Sorry, that was of no use to you.

the tron sound on closer was mondo cool. That would be my only question to that guy about gear, I think the rest would all be about tori amos.
what a cool time to be alive.
I cant wait until that comes around again, I hope I still have my hearing.

Doesn't Trent just jam directly into his sampler? If not, it's pretty close.
Aside, like you said, regardless of what you think of the dude, it is pretty impressive that he did what he did virtually by himself. To that, I'm not sure if he has a peer.

maybe apples and oranges, but lenny kravitz did some shit by himself that is just plain retarded. Its one thing to have a sequencer play the stuff or some of the stuff you did yourself in time for you. Its a whole other experience to play everything live and take peoples faces off.

actually i plan on interviewing dave 'rave' ogilvie who has worked with reznor on a few of his projects. i'll be sure to get some gear info for y'all when i get around to doing the interview- which won't be for a while though.
and just a longshot idea- if anyone is connected enough and is going to the tape op con in NOLA- perhaps you can set up a little tour of his studio when you're there? though i doubt the possibility is next to nil. but then again, it could be something i can arrange as a sidebar? hmmm..

i interned where he did parts of his first record...i'm not sure what he did by himself but i seem to remember a big change in styles on his tapes once flood hit...i think the guy was in a band around here called the exotic birds...new wave stuff...his stuff didn't sound too different from that.

i am more interested in hearing from dave ogilvie!
i think a lot of the nin sound, very inspired by dave-rave,
was pretty common gear & synths with simply intense programming,
making the old stuff do things it's not quite built to do.
not sure it quite matters what the exact machines were.

Yup, in fact I ended up with his Mirage rack sampler. Sits right on top of my mks80 that was used by Celion Dions programmer. Weird combination and I'm not a fan of either artist.AstroDan wrote:You could have bought the gear he was using. "They" were selling all the outboard gear from his studio on ebay a couple years back.

No doubt, but Lenny's also done stuff with just his voice and an acoustic guitar that's incredable. Trent admits in the early days some of the live performance was coming off DAT. I suppose "entertainment" is really a Machiavellian process. Only people like us really care how it's pulled off.
