cheap phones

Post by wardshorsehead » Fri Jun 06, 2003 9:24 pm

I have a project coming up that I need some extra headphones for tracking. These won't be used at all for mixing or other critical situations, just to give the players a decent representation of what's up while they overdub, or track in isolation. My budget is way tight right now, and I'd rather spend the better part of it on a decent four way headphone amp at this point. I'm not worried about a real tight enclosure as bleed won't be an issue...Any advice? Thanks...

BTW, any advice on a simple four-way headphone amp / distribution would be great....only need to be able to control levels...

The Koss KSC series (KSC-35, 50, and 55) are regarded as pretty decent, and they're under $20, though, they're clip-on ear sort of headphones, which may not be suitable for a quick listen. I've also heard that the Philips HP170 headphones are good for their $20 price tag. I suggest scouring the Headwize forums for some suggestions, but if all you're looking for is a "decent" representation for tracking, then you'll probably be fine just about any pair of headphones...

Check out the Behringer headphone amps - "powerplay" I think they call them. They're under $100 and I think it would be hard to go cheaper, even DIY, unless your time is worth nothing.

There's a cheaper Rolls here, but I've never used it, and it looks a bit fragile:

BSW (http://www.bswusa.com/) has a 5-pack of Senheisser HD202 phones for $89. They're not the best, but they have a lot of Senheisser sound (if that makes any sense).

BTW I had a powerplay catch on fire. I'm not saying it's a bad headphone amp, just make shure it stays cool.

I just got a bunch of Labtech phones from a computer surplus store. They're big closed back phones . They sound good enough and I paid $5 a set. It doesn't matter what kind you buy, they'll be destroyed after 5 or 6 sessions.

I just bought a batch of phones that actually sound quite good, and they are sturdy as well. They are only $20 bucks each. Here is the website.

Believe me,they are well worth it. :D
