Searching for Midwestern Studio with Neve 80 series....

Post by theenvycorps » Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:22 am

My band is mixing in the spring and our engineer prefers a Neve 80 console...we're from Iowa and would like to mix close to home. Thanks in advance for the help!

Gravity Studios in Chicago. Neve 8058, Barefoot monitors, great compressors and outboard and great folks. Tell Doug Tony says hi.

I was also going to recommend Gravity. Doug's a great guy!

Another plug for Doug. I only know him peripherally but he's got a great reputation hereabouts. And I've been to Gravity a couple of times, very nice comfy studio.

+1 on Pachyderm. In the woods (read: easier to concentrate), great accomodations and great vibe. Top rate gear.

Not that it matters so much, but it has a great history: Nirvana In Utero, PJ Harvey Rid of Me, various Soul Asylum stuff, and even Killing Joke(!)

Plus you're only 45 minutes from downtown Minneapolis.

I've worked at both Pachyderm and The Terrarium, in Minneapolis, and you'd probably have a better experience at The Terrarium. From my experience, Pachyderm is nice (plus, there's a whole "motel" on premise) but it's hard to book time there, especially without a great amount of notice. Also, if you do investigate it, tell them you're a indie band with no label ties. That way you won't be paying top dollar but get a indie rate.

The Terrarium has anything you'd want at your disposal, especially for a mix. They also have Magneto Mastering in the same building, my personal favorite mastering suite. The only drawback vs Pachyderm is The Terrarium doesn't have living quarters.

Other than that I'm sure there are plenty of places in Chicago with a Neve 80 series but might not have the same reliable variety of outboard gear.

Thanks for the help gents...it actually is more cost effective to do it in the UK so we're heading over in 2 weeks to the Dairy in London.
