February's MSP Audio Geeks meetup is on Wednesday, February 22nd from 7-9pm. Levi Stugelmeyer of Summer Winter Studios will be our host. We are excited for this joint outing with the Mpls.-St. Paul Studio Nerds group, which is moderated by Gregg Ward.

Levi John Stugelmeyer is a drummer, producer and studio owner. He is the touring drummer for Nashville based artist Caitlyn Smith and the owner of Summer - Winter - Studios in Saint Paul, MN.

Summer - Winter - Studios is a compound based in the old offices of the King Koil mattress factory. It consists of a professional recording studio, rehearsal studio, and a 1,000 square foot gallery/performance space. It is also host to multiple photographers, artists, and musicians.

Gregg Ward is a songwriter, musician, and engineer residing in St. Paul, MN. He is the curator of the MSP Studio Nerds Facebook Group and a mastering engineer at Studio Arcade Mastering. Some of the things he is currently thinking about are where vintage and new merge, future potential and encouraging artists, cultivating creative catalysts in the studio, writing a better pop song and finding a good red wine.

In partnership with Summer Winter Studios, we are trying something new we're calling the Free Trade Fix Table.
  • Do you have gear that works great but you never use and would like to see it put to use?
  • Do you have gear that just doesn?t work right and know you will never get around to fixing?
  • Have something that you would like to trade for another piece of gear?
  • Do you have strong fixit skills and want to save some money with your time?
In the spirit of coming together and sharing in community, stop by the Free Trade Fix table and check it out. Feel free to take or donate something. Help yourself and someone else.

Invite your friends and join us for an evening of audio geekery! Feel free to BYOB. If you are planning to attend, please email mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com.

October MSP Audio Geeks meetup

Post by audiochick » Tue Sep 26, 2017 8:28 am

October's MSP Audio Geeks meetup is Tuesday, October 10th, at 4pm at Drum Farm Studio. Thanks to Jackson Dols and Jared Miller for coordinating this!

From the website:
Drum Farm Studio is the recording studio of drummer John Louis Richardson, located in rural Menomonie, WI. Set in the pastoral farmland of the Midwest, Drum Farm Studio offers natural sounding acoustics on a secluded 100-acre organic farm, away from the distractions of the city.

A 100-year-old granary barn was converted to a recording studio in 2010 and features walls lined with reclaimed, old-growth lumber—some boards as wide as three feet. The wood-lined walls and acoustical design of the rooms make for a sound that’s lively but not too lively—just right.

Check out this video for a sneak peek of the studio.

Feel free to invite your friends and join us for an afternoon of audio geekery! Since this is a ways away we encourage folks to carpool. Please email mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com if you’re planning to attend & if you’d like to carpool.

Date: Tuesday, October 10, 2017
Time: 4pm
Location: Drum Farm Studio

This month we have a bonus meetup! October's second MSP Audio Geeks meetup is Wednesday, October 11th from 4-6pm at Grey Ghost Music, hosted by Brack Herfurth.

Grey Ghost Music is currently building out a new studio space. Next Wednesday we'll get a sneak peek at the studio in progress. It's not often we get to see a studio while it's being built so we're excited about this opportunity.

From the website:
Grey Ghost is changing the way a music-house operates. We strip back the traditional music-house layers by operating as a network of composers around the US and abroad.

Our collective of industry-leading composers and touring artists produce memorable music for media across all platforms. Grey Ghost composers span the spectrum of styles and sounds providing your project a diverse range of results.

Through this model, you’ll get better access to composers, better music and you won't spend wasteful rounds of revisions finding the sound you're looking for.

Feel free to invite your friends and join us for an afternoon of audio geekery! You are welcome to BYOB If you are planning to attend please RSVP to mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com.

November 2017 MSP Audio Geeks meetup - 11/30

Post by audiochick » Wed Nov 15, 2017 1:55 pm

November's MSP Audio Geeks meetup is Thursday, November 30th from 7-9pm at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Thanks to Dawn Schot Klotzbach for hosting us!

The studio is located in the Main building (the one with the large gallery space) on the 3rd floor in room 329. Knock if the door is closed.

The sound class at MCAD is part of the Media Arts program, required for all filmmaking, animation, and web & multi-media students. 2 years ago, MCAD re-built their sound studio with consulting from Orfield Labs and installation/design by North Orbit. It is a 5.1 capable mixing station with a large semi-isolated recording booth. It uses a Lynx Aurora-8 interface and Dangerous Music ST monitoring system with near-field Genelec monitors. It has video mirroring to the booth for ADR and foley.

Dawn Schot Klotzbach has been teaching the sound class at MCAD for the last 14 years. She worked at Intuitive recording studio for 7 years and as a freelance sound mixer/engineer for 17 years. She is a filmmaker and video installation artist and a musician.

Feel free to invite your friends and join us for an afternoon of audio geekery! Please note that since this is a school alcohol is not allowed. If we are thirsty we can hit a local watering hole afterwards. If you are planning to attend please RSVP to mspaudiogeeks at gmail dot com.
