Sad. He was an unrepentant mother-fucker and yet still a hugely important figure in 20th century music. He secured his place in history as a talent scout for Sun records and the force behind Rocket 88. The Ike and Tina stuff was just gravy.

He was a studio owner, too... Bolic Sound Studio in LA. I think Frank Zappa recorded there.

The NY Post headline...

"IKE 'BEATS' TINA TO DEATH"

Wow.
As it was in the begining, so shall it be in the end...

Ike was not perfect. His flaws were well documented as are those of Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Sam Phillips, and many other industry giants. Having said that, Ike Turner's place in popular culture should not be ignored.

Turner was, as a previous post suggested, a brilliant talent scout and studio musician. His Cobra recordings with the Kings of Rhythm are nothing short of terrific and should be a part of any reputable record collection. What's lost in all the rhetoric about his demons is his influence as a guitarist. There are very few guitarists that are immediately recognizable, Ike fell firmly within that category.

I sent Ike an e-mail a couple months ago to thank him for his influence on American music. He graciously resonded in short order. Does that make him an angel? It most certainly does not, nor does it excuse his past actions but at least I had to opportunity to thank him for what was right about his life.

Man, but those were some medieval asswhoopin's. He was living up in Suisun City for a long time, the section 8 capital of California, which is probably why he lived there. I was just watching an Ike and Tina concert on Comcast (one of those free concert selections), live in Amsterdam/1969 -- the tour they did with the Rolling stones that culminated in Altamont --several months ago, and thinking what an underrated band leader the dude was, and how it was vitiated by those severe asswhoopins and the mountains of coke the guy snorted.
