group buy! : cinemag or lundahl ribbon mic xfmrs!

Post by themagicmanmdt » Sat Feb 09, 2008 3:05 pm

ok. here's the idea!

soup up our ribbon mics!

i'm open to either of two options:

1) the cinemag CM-9888 (ala RCA 44) : http://www.cinemag.biz/mic_output/mic_output.html

2) the lundahl LL 2912: http://www.kandkaudio.com/transformers.html

somewhere, somewhere (i lost the page!) someone did a shootout between the stock shinybox, a cinemag shiny and a lundahl shiny. on a blind test to my ears, i picked out the cinemag as the best sounding one, so my vote is for the cinemag. i'd get either one, though, because they both do nice things.

i think the lundahl makes the bass the nicest and does the most 'opening up' on the mic, but the cinemag wasn't so drastic, and for some reason, i thought it worked.

so, anyways!

i'm going to get 4: i think that in order for it to work and be worthwhile, we should have at least 25 or so. i'll get price break info.

if you want to join in, send me a PM with:

name
which transformer you prefer
how many you want

and after everyone's in, i'll group email everyone how much they'll be, and we'll see if we still want to do it. i'm going to say that the 15th i'll have some price info rounded up, and hoping to order by the 20th.

there was a tapeop ribbon mic buy - this'll be the tapeop ribbon transformer buy!

I'd be interested in 2 LL-2912s.... these are the small ones that'll fit in the Nady RSM-4, right? Michael Joly says that will work.

I still have a Cinemag tranny for my Shinybox 23 that I have yet to install.... *rolls eyes*

I'd be interested in two of the tiny Lundahls.

is the cinemag bigger than the lundahl? you have a cinemag - would it fit in an RSM 4?

I haven't seen the lundahls in person. The tranny I got is for the bigger chinese ribbons, I have the Shinybox 23, which is the same as the Nady RSM-2, Apex 210, etc. It fits that. I think it also fits the Shinybox 46/Nady RSM-1/Apex 205.

Just to be clear, there are 2 models each from Cinemag and Lundahl useful for the chinese ribbons:

Cinemag

CM-9888
http://cinemag.biz/mic_output/CM-9888.pdf
This is the one that goes in the larger body mics.

CM-9887
http://cinemag.biz/mic_output/CM-9887.pdf
This is the one that goes in the smaller body mics.

Lundahl

LL2913
This is the one that goes in the larger body mics.

LL2912
This is the one that goes in the smaller body mics.

it seems we've got more intrest in the lundahl's than the cinemag's, but anyways, total tally as of this post:

12-14 (had an opaque reply or two)

let's keep em coming! i think 10+ is price break level #1 already.

also, keep in mind that shipping outside of the US would be more, for the international 'oppers. it might just be feasable for the US and Canadians here on the board.

I've been curious about these... has anyone compared them to the lundahl or cinemag? There's no mu-metal casing, which could account for (at least some of) the price difference. If it fits in the mu-metal case of the Chinese transformer, then that's not an issue. I think these were modeled after the 77dx transformers.

Is this still a go?
If so; is the Lundahl 2911 an option?
It might finally be time to drop one into my ML-52!

i'd be in for a couple. I'd prefer the small Lundahl.

Thanks for the idea!

ok everyone!

it seems there's a much bigger demand for the lundahl over the cinemag.

so, this is officially for the lundahl 2912 only. (sorry, gotta stick to one model for a price break).

i still haven't heard word back about the actual prices and levels. hang tight, hopefully by the end of the week, specifics are out.

thanks for the replys everyone! i think we're up to over 20 so far.

for those that posted wanting cinemags - do you still want a lundahl? reply here or PM me?

I might be up for a Lundahl, if the price is right...
