Potluck Con, any thoughts?

I looked at airfare today and it was a lot cheaper than I had expected. I am giving serious thought to going. It looks like it could be a lot of fun :D

yeah, new orleans is doing everything they can to get the tourists back. Its a port town only vestigally. That place has run on tourism for as long as I can remember. So expect to be able to find some deals if you are willing to look. Check out travelzoo.com, its a good round up of all the other sites.

but I grew up in New Orleans.
do:
go to Cafe Du Monde for beignets
go to Cajun Coffe Pot for breakfast or lunch at least once.
get an oyster poboy.
go to the tip top or Checkpoint Charlies
get a muffaleta

Dont:
keep your wallet in your back pocket
get falling down drunk in the french quarter
pronounce New Orleans to rhyme with jeans and beans. Pronounce it to rhyme with contact lense and mercedes benz.
try to score drugs
talk back to cops
talk back to anyone of obvious sicilian heritage
whip out a map if you are lost.

The crime isnt really that bad, just dont be falling down drunk at 3am with your wallet in your back pocket. While looking for drugs. Then talk crap to a cop after a sicilian guy mugs you.
Clearly you dont live in NOLA anymore, nor have you been there in awhile. After Katrina i moved to Maryland but i visit NOLA 3-4 time s a year. And luckly i will be in town for a wedding for Potluck so im there!

1 Dont go to Checkpoint Charlies, unless your doing laundry.
DO go to Circle Bar, Hi Ho Lounge, the Saint, or Mimmies, and others

2 Dont go to Cafe du Monde, unless your really looking to be a tourist stand out, I think theres a discount if you were a fanny pack. Do go to Parasols for lunch, also Frankie and Jonnys or Mother has awesome Po'boys too. hushpuppies and a Po'boy will do. Or Verdi Mart makes a wicked French Fry Po'boy, try it to believe it.

Breakfast can be had at Blue Plate Dinner, Camillias Grill, or Slim Goodies.

Dinner, go to Ninja for Sushi, Mona's for the best Middle Eastern in the US, Slice for pizza, Juans Flying Burrito for Mexican, and Jacques-Imos for the best NO food ever, Fried chicken of the gods!

Remember, New Orleans is a food Mecca! YOU DO NOT have to eat "Cajun" the whole time. All foods are good in NO, its a tourist town that thrives on food. Just dont eat in the French Quarter, its over priced, and not that good, ask a local were to eat and youll be in good hands!

3 Yes, get a Muffaletta at Central Market in the Quarter!

As far as all the other Dont, just dont get drunk on Bourbon street and youll be fine. In fact, just dont even go to Bourbon st. Unless you like piss and vomit.

Do local things and spend money at local business as ive listed. ride the street car. Panhandle. here some great Jazz (not in the Quarter), and let the good times roll. See ya at the Potluck!!!

Is Hi Ho still there? I thought that side of st claude got bulldozed.
I stand by my assertion that Cafe Du Monde deserves to be visited. I have yet to get beignets anywhere else that can even hold a candle.
Camelia grill I just cant handle. Its way too uncle fucking tom.

Camillias is way uncle tom, i agree, but as a tourist it gives you real prespective into the south that was. Cafe du Monde has wicked Beignets but the arent locally owned anymore, unfortunetly. So for my spelling, im drinking to celibrate the Saints awesome draft. HAHA. Didnt mean to rip your Dos and donts, i just feel diferent about things right now, and local is a must for that town to survive. Are you going to Potluck Calaver?

I may still be able to pull it out of my ass if I have a ton of work in the next few. I am already ahead on my bills and could use an excuse to visit my old city.

I'm going :) after having to miss the last two TOC's. :(
(Well, buying a house, having a kid and opening a new studio are good excuses, no? ;) )

Is Frankie and Johnny's still there? Love that place...
he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

Just over a month till Potluck kicks off!

All my ducks are in a row, tickets booked, one long haul flight via Dubai to NY then onto ATL and a road trip down to NOLA... the journey should be as fun as the actual conference!

So do we have any other takers? Who else will be enjoying the NOLA summer heat?
