Yep. that's one big ol' huge room.
www.stereophonicstudios.com
I found an 1178 locally, a blackface LA-4 (crazy), an orban 424a, symetrix 500, a bunch of old and new ribbons, some modded condensers, my Sound Workshop 1280b with the Super EQ, and an Echo Layla.
Soon, hopefully, I'll figure out and fix a nice 8 track for the studio. Do it like the old days. Jump in the deep end.
I think I've got the biggest tracking room in the city of Chicago for the best rate - only $225/day.
Djimbe (on the boards here) had a great idea of flying some 703(like) panels on angles from the ceiling. When I get a big ladder, I might give it a try. I like the room as it is, though. It's its own reverb chamber.
New studio joy!

Awesome! I'd love to see it in person. Congrats!
Edit: Seeing those pics, I'm reminded how much I dug that big room. Wow.

Nice job, Marshall! Glad you got it done to the point you're opening the doors. This is a cool BIG space that creative people could make very interesting use of.
Hey, I'm in the city the evenings of April 9 and 10 if you still have a need for that 1/4" MRL...

Great to hear! I can't begin to imagine how much that space would cost in NYC. And you can offer yourself so... cheap! That's it.... I'm moving to Chicago. Best wishes. I hope things do nothing but ramp up from here for you.
Vibey as hell, man. Vibey as hell. Looking forward, I might suggest ramping down on the outboard purchases and ramping up on the construction and room treatment. Luckily, your room is enourmous enough that you could probably just build some Gobos and use the massive space to your advantage.
You'll be amazed at how flexible a giant box like yours can become with a half-dozen gobos floating around on casters. I'd say that would be more important than any mics or outboard, and more cost effective than any other room treatment you could start with in your beautifully gritty and unusual space.

I'm officially DONE with outboard - 8 channels of various compression (3 of them being stereo linkable) is perfect (8 buss, 8 track, 8 everything). I enjoy working with limitations - I always get better results than having an arsenal in front of me.
Yes, the profits of the next booked session will go toward a trip to SPI and two 9-packs of john mansville. BTW, the stuff works great. I think it was $80 with tax for a pack of 9 2x4' pieces here in Chicago.
The crazy thing is that I overestimated how much room sound or reverb bleed would go into the mics. With my initial sessions with clients, I backed things away, but the next day's playback had me thinking "Man, shoulda backed the mics up more..."
It's not that out-of-hand that you might think. But, gobo's do keep things nice and punchy without sucking the room away from the mics.
If anyone here on the boards simply wants to swing by, I wouldn't mind a tour. If anything, a big place by myself feels a little lonely when I'm just soldering and soldering and soldering.

Looks like you need some red, white and blue gobos, Marshall.
