Decent places to play in Boston, Hartford, or Providence

Regional activities, relevant news, job openings, studio searches, local beer nights (not a forum to plug the new album you just worked on)

Decent places to play in Boston, Hartford, or Providence

Post by Team Genius » Thu May 15, 2008 2:08 pm

Putting together a late summer mini tour of the Northeast and am looking for venues in Boston, Hartford, Providence or New Haven. Any help or suggestions would be extremely welcome.

Thanks.

Hey.
In Providence there's AS220 (not for profit performance space/bar/galleries) and the Living Room. There's a new place (old bar, new owners) called the Penalty Box booking indie stuff. You could probably fill a couple nights by poking around at Lots of Noise. There's a forum and can-do spirit there.

Over here, in New Bedford MA, there's a cool place called the New Wave Cafe (beware the blaring M?tal Myspace page). Shoot me a note if you end up here, it's a cool town.

have fun

HAHA toad's place is so funny when they haul out the "cow corral" for the underage kiddies.... so strange.

Boston
For your music, you're best to check out:
Great Scott in Allston (the home of all the cool touring underground indie bands)
Abbey Lounge in Somerville (hit or miss regarding bills, but a hip little room)
Middle East in Cambridge (two clubs, upstairs and down. You'd probably get a show upstairs. It's historically the home of cool indie music since the last ice age. Lately, the cooler bookings have been at Great Scott, but it's still a great room to get a "Boston" gig. Has a killer middle eastern restaurant attached with the best french fries on the planet, not to mention great falafel!)
TT The Bear's in Cambridge (next door to the Middle East. Same description really. Just no food)

Worcester
An hour due-west of Boston, but a good "in-between" stop if you need to fill dates. This is sort of my "home town" so the honest skinny is that there are some cool clubs to play at and some awesome bands to play with, but if you can't hook up on a bill with other liike-minded bands, or are playing an "off" night, then don't expect too much.
Lucky Dog Music Hall is the biggest of the three rock clubs in town. Owner/booking agent is really cool if he likes your band, but often it's hard to put together a bill that makes sense because Worcester has some poor taste in what will draw. Thursdays can be fun, and Friday and Saturday are where it's really at.
Ralph's is a very vibey club whose stage is upstairs and diner and jukebox club are downstairs. Very cool room.
Tammany used to be the home of the jambands, but it has shed that moniker in the last few years and become a really great room for pop bands and indie bands. Parking can suck if it's busy, and the weekend night load-out can be "interesting" due to commotion and police action as the adjacent dance club let's out.

Right, I forgot about that place. It's a night at that bar called Transiet Authority, it's very fun.

AS220 in Providence is a sick place to play. The best show I ever played was there.

Providence is a fun town to jam in.
