RIP Bo Diddley
I'm not too sure what forum this should fall under.

pretty nice photoset on TIME's site.
He was one of my best discoveries in my parents' record collections. Track down some vinyl of those early records, there's alot going on in those beats. And you just can't beat a square guitar.
RIP

Bo Diddley was Rock 'n' Roll!
Yeah, this is really sad news. Bo Diddley was one of the biggest reasons why I picked up a guitar; I got my first one within 9 months of seeing him live. He's also one of the biggest reasons why I kept playing. That Bo Diddley Beat is infectious and fun. I listened to his Chess Box last night and was just blown away. So many great songs. The studio chatter with Little Walter was funny as hell too - a lot of the same stuff from Super Blues, but great nonetheless mixed in with all these great Chess tracks. "Ooh Baby" is such an amazing song. Thank you, Bo Diddley!

This thread needs more love.
Bo is probably the number one "least known" inventor of rock and roll - a style which of course had several inventors, but Bo is perhaps the most important of those that still remain largely overlooked (by the mainstream).
His name should be mentioned along side Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard. At least in part, we'd all be listening to some other kind of music today without him. Perhaps, in death, history will correct this oversight.

There was another column in the NY Times about the ubiquitousness of that beat. In the column, it was pointed out that almost every form of music has used it, except latin and... Hip Hop. I found that interesting. I couldn't off the top of my head think of a hip hop song that used it; I find that strange for some reason.
It is sad that he died. I thought he was older than 79.

Definitely one of the most influential rock guitarists. I listened to the Chess Box about a million times, and I learned some pretty cool riffs on guitar. He did some pretty trippy shit in the 70's that I haven't been able to find -- reminded me a bit of Freddy King, who was another incredible stylist in a different way. At least Chuck Berry's still alive.
