The new Russian Recording is done! check it out.

Post by Russian Recording » Sat Sep 20, 2008 12:09 pm

Hey, I spent the past three months building a new studio in Bloomington, IN. I got a huge building that was wide open with 17' foot ceilings throughout. I then designed a space within it. And then took a crazy loan out, and with the help of many friends, built it. I didn't cut any corners... redisigned the HVAC, got a whole new electrical service installed with star grounding, isolated outlets and even 220 V outlets in all the tracking rooms for my russian tube mics. maximum isolation between rooms, particularly the control room. Or you can open the doors and let it bleed. Also a bunch on new gear (indluding a fully loaded 10 space API 500 rack, MCI MX 70 1" 16 track, Calrec Soundfield MKIV mic and a bunch of other stuff) and a brand new baby grand piano. 23 x 28 x 17 live room, 13 x 16 x 12 control room, 9 x 10 x 12 dead room, 10 x 12 x 13.5 live iso room, 25 x 35 band lounge.

Anyhow, we busted our asses for a little under three months and it's done. I'm pretty excited... and very broke!

If any of you freelancers are looking for a cool place to work that is super comfortable, sounds awesome and is outrageously cheap, send me a message. 200 bucks/day rental. Bloomington is within 3 hours of Columbus, OH, Chicago and St. Louis. 4 hours from Nashville, TN. Within an hour and half from Louisville and Indianapolis.

I dig that lavendar color. I tried to do that in my studio, but it came out way too periwinkle so I covered over it and made it sage and I love it.

mike - looks awesome, congrats - can't wait to check it out in person!

also, i think you meant otari MX70 not MCI. when'd you get that? i saw the remote in a control room pic but didn't see it on the gear list yet on your site. if you run into any issues hopefully i can help, i used to have one. does it live in its own machine room?

thanks!
yeah, it's an otari. it does live in the machine room, with an access door in the control room. apparently 4 of the channels dont work. but it was given to me, so i cant complain.

Well done. I always enjoyed the vibe of the old place too. This looks really nice as well.

Best of luck....

I'm in Stationary Odyssey and I think that we are gonna be recording some drums there in the near(ish) future. I can't wait to check out the new place!

side note: I have actually played music in that building before during it's previous life as a venue.

What venue was it? Feel free to PM. I was in b-ton for 10 years mid-80s to mid-90s.

in the early millenium it was the headquarters for secretly canadian records. for the past couple years it was The Art Hospital, which was an art gallery and venue for local and touring musicians.
