**DUMPSTER DIVE OF THE YEAR*****

Post by supafuzz » Tue Feb 03, 2009 10:54 am

Went for a walk after dinner last night and spotted an old RCA film projector
Gonna strip it down for the tubes and speaker and cool chicken head knobs and handle etc. It was hard to see what else was in the dumpster in the dark.

So this morning I woke up and thought about going back. By the time I got it together to leave the house it was snowing slightly but wet big flakes.
I get down the block to the dumpster and immediately find a cool small
tweed makeup case
It was filled with cables and a cool old Roberts mic stand.

But as I looked deeper I spotted a familiar logo ROLAND and dug up a vintage monophonic synth! SH-2000. got it home and dried it off turned it upside down and left it on some towels as I went off to do errands. Got back, plugged it in, the jewel light lit up and groovy synth sounds came out of my amplifier!

here's a stock picture of one.

It has those organ flipper buttons on the front [bad bad design as a couple are broken off] But I was Keith Emerson for a few minutes and it even has a setting named "POPCORN" which nails the Hot Butter sound !

Very cool..It's the best dumpster dig of all time for me!

About 6 years ago I found a Clavinet on the sidewalk outside of my Williamsburg apartment. It needed a little work, but after about 30$ of supplies (yarn and a hot glue gun) and about 2 hours of work, it was back to normal.

that's awesome, every time i see posts like this i always wonder why i am never lucky enough to run across anything that cool, and then i have to remind myself that i found that there just happened to be an otari mx 5050 2 track machine and a decent upright piano buried in a corner of the basement in the building where i have my recording space. so i guess i'm not entirely unlucky.
the tape is rolling, the ones and zeros are... um... ones and zeroing.

Dude?!? Did we miss that Otari at the show and tell? ;)

All things aside my greatest dumpster dive involved an old tube RCA console that worked perfectly until a week before I left Los Angeles, telling me it was time to go.

it was setup on those crazy industrial shelves i have, but it never became a topic of interest i guess. i haven't really done a whole lot with it yet, so i didn't really have anything to show and tell about it. but i am planning on putting it through its paces this month of course. i'm gonna try running drums through it to smooth things out and add that tapey goodness, or maybe even entire mixes. we'll see. i'll probably post some samples on the rpm thread/site later this week of my ridiculous drum setup for everyone's enjoyment too.

My friends and I dumpstered an old a-101 hammond organ. It was behind a junk shop. The lady said it was broken. I oiled it up and boom, worked like a charm. My other buddy has it at his place now. I know where I can get another nicer one for free in Chicago, but I aint tellin!

also, Hello! Been subscribed to the magazine for over a year now, just posting on the board today!

not sure how to post an mp3

Post by supafuzz » Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:33 pm

not sure how to post an mp3 but we used the roland on a session today
and it totally worked for the song intro..we used the random note generator and tried to lock it up to the drums. It works for a few bars and then drifts
so I cut and nudged that part of the track and whoo hoo!

Would love to hear them. Try mediafire.com -- I think they still offer free accounts.
