That's an interesting, albeit delusional, interpretation of what just happened.
What? Me delusional? What? Nooooooo!
So, you're saying that I chimed in to suggest that these people giving him hell for trying to find his son a job are over-reacting by trying to psychoanalyze his relationship with his son, and taking it to the seemingly ridiculous extreme of going waaaay off topic to discuss a photo on his (not his son's) myspace page, and then you put me in my place where?
C'mon, you know no one is going to put you in anyplace you don't want to be. I don't think anyone EVER put you in your place, least of all me.
Then, Zep suggested that no employer would even look at him without a degree, a stellar GPA and a demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activities, which is complete and utter bullshit. And, this is the post that "won the race"?!?!
Funny, I know, it is 100% diametrically opposed to any experience i've had, having done my internship in NYC without school and getting gigs out the wazzoo with pretty much every act I went out for. I did ask an engineer that hired me once why the school guys weren't mixing yet and he said "you can't teach ears, most of these guys are going to be in a cubicle in a month."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Never a dull moment in this place!
That's the real ticket.
Your post is the one that won the race.
Harumph!

Whoa, whoa! First of all, I never tried to offend anyone so I am sorry if I came across that way. Second of all, the man stated his son wanted a JOB and and I was very honest with how finding a JOB goes. If you wanted to be a mixing or recording engineer sure you might not need schooling. But what i was saying was, when you look for a job, sometimes you need to take jobs that require skills that you must learn....and to be honest, I will defiently state my opinion and say that if you don't get a degree of some sort these days, you are either extremely risky or downright crazy..perhaps none of you have ever looked for a 'real job'?? look on your local craigslist right now and go through jobs...the ones with $100-200k...they require degrees and usually years experience..duh... If you think recording is hard to get into..jeez..why do you think college is so competitive to get into?...I don't really understand how I was wrong. but apparently there was a miscommunication. No offense taken! :D

I couldn't care much less what you think about it, since you haven't read the post from the beginning. It got dropped already, you keep dragging it up though. Indignation, nope, you may have no obligation in your life and have no clue about mine. I do. Not indignation, service. It's a lot of responsibility to know that you are the cause in all your interactions, that's why most people abandon their responsibility and any relationship to it. I don't care what they do, I'm just not one of them and I won't become one just because it offends you. I don't live to please and I'm no one's professional best friend. I don't owe THAT to anyone for any reason. Neither do you.

Damn, this is the busiest post I've ever started. Vigorous and painful.

I didn't think those first comments were dishonest, but bitter - like I was being scolded for trying to put a word in for my son. Why? If you're not gonna give him a job what the hell do you care? I wasn't asking YOU anyway. The idea that parents shouldn't be allowed to put in the good word is crazy. Is it that your life has sucked and you had it rough? You want everybody to have it hard? Did you and your dad hate each other.?We all have to make our way and life is challenging enough - a little help is nice. It sucks to get smacked for trying to ask for help on this forum.

My kid will be a way better recordist than me. He's already created an immense body of 80 some recorded songs in 6 incarnations, has written an entire book of poetry, and always seems to have a 6th sense about what's culturally on the rise - but he needs to earn a living and he is broke - hungry artist in New York trying to make the scene happen. His "Peace In" musicis amazing for laptop bedroom/basement work - takes you right outside of time. He's got a great ear and sensibilities - part of it comes from his being a Taoist. Yes he is making his own work, not waiting around, but not yet seeing the translation to a means of living comfortably well in New York.

As to the Charles Manson aside...Brian wrote about me:
You're a drama queen. A weirdo, and no one in their right mind would ever say they liked that murdering swine's music, screw how you feel
Putting Manson's sneering photo on my old band's, Van Gogh's Ear, website was a sardonic joke. I knew someone would notice eventually. But really, he used to be friends with the Beach Boys (before he committed conspiracy to murder), wrote a lot of songs, came very, very close to having a record deal and there are several websites dedicated to his music. He wrote some pretty cool shit. But, you have a point - I wouldn't want to listen to Hitler's songs or hang one of his paintings in my home.

In any case, Brian, Yes , alright, I'm a weirdo drama queen and you're a huge blowhole nitwit (who seems oddly hung up on Charles Manson yourself) and I feel bad for any kid who might be unfortunate enough to be yours because I guess you threw them into the river with lead boots and yelled, "Swim!"

But I still love you. :? Peace.

Meanwhile his job search continues - nearly 100 inquiries to record companies, studios, small and large retail and department stores in a week. Only one place is currently hiring.
You just got to keep puttin' the good stuff out there

lotusstudio wrote:Thanks. Fan of Manson's music, I am. I dig his persona, but not so much the murders.
The reason I told you that the photo was "out" was because it is not making you as a dad, the only person we have to go on from THIS post on a public messageboard, look particularly sane.
Every post you agree with will be no help, every post you don't agree with is your coaching on how to get your son hired in NYC, a subject I know plenty about.
Manson is not liked in NYC, he's not suddenly cool there and he is summarily dismissed by all but those who have no money. Why? Because, like wearing a Hitler shirt in a synagogue, you're more likely to draw an ass kicking.

The reason you think the posts are bitter is because you are reading a lot of crap that you brought to the conversation into people's responses because you didn't like the responses.
lotusstudio wrote:you're a huge blowhole nitwit (who seems oddly hung up on Charles Manson yourself) and I feel bad for any kid who might be unfortunate enough to be yours because I guess you threw them into the river with lead boots and yelled, "Swim!"
They hurt your feelings, but, as an adult, can you put those feelings in a bag and take them to the bank? If someone stomps on them in a suitcase does it destroy them? Of course not and that's about how much they matter.
No one said that parents "shouldn't be allowed to do " anything, they gave you a warning that people in NYC will not welcome this tactic, and they are probably right.
Now, don't get upset that people don't agree with your tactic, accept the instruction, don't get upset that you were told hat the manson pic is disconcerting, accept the coaching.

As far as anyone else getting upset about posts that's just to bizzarre for words. It's pointles to get upset. You had to have expectations unmet to be upset.
The only expectations that could have you be upset by answers that did not agree with your tactic are non-agreement. Adults should be able to handle that with more class. So, chalk it up to your listening skills and emotions getting tangled, no biggie, do better.

So, reading your post, I get that you're desperate to have him NOT come to work for you, live in your house, and eat up all the cheerios. You want him to fly.
So, let him, send him money if you have to. He'll figure it out.

I'll dismiss your slight about my parenting skills.
Harumph!
