Who's making good heavy records?

Post by SkullChris » Wed Feb 16, 2011 7:03 am

So this summer, my band is looking to record a full-length record. Right now, we'd really like to head out to CA to record with Tim Green at Louder Studios, but it's looking like the feasibility of getting out there might not be a very good. So, I wanted to ask y'all, who's making good heavy records on the east coast? Our budget is gonna be about $3000-$3500 and we'd like to be spending about 10 days in the studio. Thanks in advance! -Chris

Dude. Last time I checked, Tim's rates are insanely low. Are you sure?

My band recorded three times at Louder and I can't say enough good things about it.

Joel Hamilton's recording of "Made Out of Babies" won "heavy record of the year" a year or two ago. NYC, baby.

Kurt Ballou (God City) and Colin Marston (Thousand Caves) both make nice sounding heavy records.

Tim's rates ARE insanely low, but getting out there and back with our gear will almost double our expenses. We really do want to work with him, but he's just on the wrong side of the country. :(

true

So does Joel Hamilton as mentioned, Steve Albini, Colin Richardson, and Andy Sneap. All different sounds. Don't know the rates on most of them. Colin Richardson and Andy Sneap are in England...

Totally true! Just brought up those two as they're in New England and hadn't been mentioned in the thread.

I second Kurt Ballou at God City. A band I know recorded with him and their record is heavy as hell.

Not sure $3500 is going to get you 10 days with most guys people are talking about here, but maybe.

In addition to some of the names already mentioned... Andrew Schneider in NYC. Kyle Spence (from Harvey Milk) in Athens. Kevin Ratterman in Louisville. All do great -- and pretty different -- work.

If you're really into Tim, he might also be down to fly out and work in a Baltimore/VA/DC studio, but of course you'll need to cover his rate + whatever studio you use. (plus airfare, etc.)

You book a tour to and from SF, playing your new album every night. Hopefully the tour pays for itself (travel expense), and meanwhile you get the ultimate set of rehearsals leading up to the session.

plus if you can back a tour you can back an album. to many bands start straight with an album...not the best plan

Fuking great idea. It makes sense, I'm sure there are many who would disagree, but I was lucky enough to play in a heavy band that actually eventually not lose money when we toured. It takes hard work, but possible, even without outside financial help, ie a label that will help/organize/manage tour stuff/finances.

I would love to work with a band halfway through a decent string of shows. I know from experience, that second and third week on the road, if substances don't get in the way, you are well oiled rock and roll machine, destroying anything in your path.

By week four, five, six, I'm barely alive, pickled.

That's very kind. I don't think of myself as particularly "good" at making heavy records, but I can certainly do it.

I was gonna mention that Don Zientara at Inner Ear is two hours away from you in Arlington. Don's a SUPER-nice guy and with his discography, I'd say he knows heavy bands.
