No more film credits in Michigan

Post by @?,*???&? » Fri Feb 18, 2011 3:01 pm

Our new clueless Governor has just whacked the Film Industry tax breaks down from $100 million to $25 million and will phase them out over two years. He is obligated to let those already projects already signed on remain for the next two years, then will eliminate the tax breaks altogether within 4 years.

Myriad colleges around Michigan offer film and audio classes- Schoolcraft, Wayne State, Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan, etc. For a Governor who campaigned on wanting to keep Michigan's youth in the state, this is a serious step backward. I feel particularly bad for the companies that invested in Michigan in the form of buying and beginning to build movie studios here.

At Schoolcraft they have gone to a waiting list for admission to the Recording Technology program because there are so many students that want to take these classes.

Also, 58% of Michiganders currently support the tax breaks for the film industry- so Rick Snyder just executed something that a majority of folks in Michigan are against.

Rick Snyder is completely out of touch.

That might be a short-sighted solution, but my guess is that Michigan is pretty well fiscally fucked and he's balancing the budget by the seat of his pants.

58% of Michiganders also think Denny McLain was framed so what's your point?
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

oh man, that link is amazing! and i'm not trying to dump on people from michigan, just making light of the glut of people wanting to have a career in a studio. :)

and on-topic, a pro-film industry initiative in a place like michigan seems like it was short-sighted from the get-go. how many studios actually began to build? was there really a big response from the industry?

Well, good thing you posted a snappy response earlier in the thread, considering you have no idea what you're talking about. Yay internets!

The response to the film tax credits has been huge, bringing in millions of dollars of revenue to local businesses and providing thousands of jobs. So yes, it has been very successful.

If I were The Government and decided that The FUTURE is with Carrots and henceforth carrot production shall be subsidized with taxpayer money, it would be great for everyone involved in the production of carrots, no? You may even expect people who otherwise wouldn't be in the carrot trade to enter the carrot trade. And they would probably make a lot of money off of it and produce a bunch of jobs. Would that then mean it was a good policy for everyone on the whole?

No, obviously not. When judging the soundness of any economic policy one must look not just at the short-run effects on a small subset of people, but also at the long-term consequences for everyone involved.

In that vein, and for a reasoned analysis of the Michigan film tax credit please do read this:
