RIP Levon Helm

We've lost one of the greatest musicians to ever sit behind the drums. I'll miss his voice and his pocket.

When I was a kid, I loved Cher's version of "The Night ... Dixie Down" but eventually got tired of it.

It was years before I heard The Band's version, and I've never tired of it.

The Last Waltz, IMO, is genius, and there's not a The Band album I don't love.

I never could choose whose songs I liked best in that unit, but Levon for damn sure had my fave voice. Not to mention that afore-mentioned pocket, and while singing ...

Levon was pure music. He played so absolutely natural.

Ouch ouch ouch.

He was a very human as well as a very talented man. I shook his hand once from the front row at an '80s Band reunion concert -- and he genuinely shook my hand, like he knew there was someone else there. No star trips with Mr. Helm.

Someone cue "All La Glory."

"Why does the Creator send me such knuckleheads?" - Sun Ra

I'm sure allot of people feel the same but for the Canadian music scene(s) this feels like a death in the family. He was part of our greatest musical export and we adopted him as one of our own.

Check out the mid to end of "Lightning in a Bottle," the Blues concert movie by Martin Scorcese from a few years ago. Levon playing percussion, jamming with Steve Jordan and an all-star band backing the Neville Brothers!!!!

Fantastic.

Levon was just in the background, out of the lights, shaking some maracas and playing sticks on a case or something. But the look on his face says-- "Heaven."

Yep, Levon was for real.

I don't understand, how did I never make the time to get up to one of the Midnight Rambles?

Depressing.

It's so easy to take things (and people) for granted, until they're not there anymore.
