How I know I am now officially a bass player

Post by vvv » Thu Jan 16, 2014 9:37 pm

Because we been working on our album, we haven't jammed live since November, altho' I've recorded some things with The Hungry Drunx and as Vlayman, on bass.

So we hadda jam 2nite, and I packed my bass and newly-config'd pedal board and a cuppla picks and went.

And played 2.5 hours with my fingers, only.

I believe I am now a bass player. 8)

That's a start.

But the pedalboard proves you're still a guitarist.

Real bassists are fingers->p-bass->fliptop.

Of course, there are very few real bassists.

When I saw "picks" I immediately doubted the veracity of your claim. Tell us you didn't plug in the pedalboard either and you might have a case.

Honestly, from the thread title I thought you were gonna say you called AAA because you locked the keys in the van with the window rolled down. Or, that your girlfriend left you for the guitarist or something.

I do play a "P" (I have a very playable '73 with a replacement neck and Bad Ass bridge) but yesterday used my Steinberger-licensed headless Hohner with the EMG's.

I like my pedal board, what has a cuppla compressors, a Bass Big Muff, a bass chorus and a auto-filter for the Bootsy in me.

As for amps, I use the one in our practice space (drummers basement) what is a 600 w. Acoustic with a 15" and and 4x10" cabs - I only wish I hadda fliptop. (At home I use a Musicman HD130 into either a ported 1x12", or a 15" Hartke w/ tweeter, depending. I often record thru a S/S Marlboro 30 w. 1x12" combo, combined with a DI; usually I just DI.)

The band give me lotsa room to play, and I take it.

No blisters this AM, but the plucking hand index and salutation finger tips is tender, and my ligaments is all kinda well-stretched and sore.

Tell that to Geddy Lee, or better yet Chris Squire...

They're not returning my calls this morning...

..but Steve Harris and George Porter Jr are in full agreement.

So this morning I'm peeling oranges for the brekkie fruit plate (to go with the eggs and ham and cheese on everything bagels) and I note my hands hurt.

Real bass player I might be, but 2.5 months off and I'm outta real bass player shape!

And, it's deadpan freezing in here!

I knew I was a bass player when I was the only one who knew how to run the PA for shows...or the only one willing at least.

now that I usually play guitar I pretend to be ignorant and talk to my friends or play a couple warm up riffs while someone else figures it out.

Only one last thing you need my son (which is actually two last things), and you will be once and irrevocably a real guitar player.

Firstly, never have your own 3-to-2 prong adaptor for your amp, regardless of how many gigs or rehearsals you do in the same location. Always ask someone else if you can borrow theirs, and be sure to never return it.

Secondly, you must master the skill of waiting until every last piece of heavy musical equipment and audio gear has been loaded into the venue before asking "in all sincerity"-- "Hey, do you guys need any help?"

Then, you will be a guitar player, my son...

You'll know you're still a guitarist when you order one of these...

I think it helps with this approach to becoming a guitarist to not even be physically strong enough to carry anything.
